Travis Brody es el creador y fundador de “The Growth of a Game” y Presidente de Premier Class Consulting (PCC), una empresa de consultoría que facilita la progresión de clubes deportivos y organizaciones en Europa y los Estados Unidos. Antes de fundar PCC, Travis Brody fue Vicepresidente de Desarrollo de Negocio de Sports 1 Marketing, un proyecto empresarial de Warren Moon, quarterback del Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Ha jugado como quarterback para los Brussels Bulls durante el período 2008-2010, durante este tiempo también se ocupó de entrenar a los quarterbacks, receivers y kick returners del equipo juvenil de los Bulls. Vive a caballo entre California, Nueva York y Europa, reforzando colaboraciones comerciales existentes y buscando nuevas formas de expansión.
Uno de sus proyectos actuales gira alrededor de la expansión del Football en Europa, tema que trata en su blog “The Growth of a Game”, presente también en twitter y facebook, donde hace reflexiones muy interesantes en cuanto al estado actual del football en Europa y sus perspectivas a corto y largo plazo.
Como profesional del football y conocedor de primera mano de la situación del deporte en los Estados Unidos y Europa, he aprovechado para hacerle una pequeña entrevista para conocer su opinión sobre la situación actual y futura de nuestro deporte. Aprovecho para agradecerle su colaboración y su disponibilidad en todo momento.
La entrevista ha sido realizada en inglés y español, dado que Travis domina el español perfectamente.
La NFL ha intentado diversas fórmulas a lo largo de la historia para mejorar la visibilidad de la liga y el football en Europa, me refiero a la NFL Europe o a la más moderna NFL International Series. En su opinión ¿cuál de las dos fórmulas es mejor?, o quizás se debería hacer de otra forma implementando las sinergias entre clubes americanos y europeos, estoy pensando al decir esto en la cooperación entre los Oakland Raiders y los Swarco Raiders.
Cada una ha sido efectiva a su manera: NFL Europe llegó quizás demasiado pronto, con la intención de crear una audiencia interesada en el Football en Europa, y al mismo tiempo estableciendo una liga de desarrollo de jugadores secundarios. Fue efectiva en sus dos objetivos, sin embargo la liga sufrió por la cerencia de continuidad. Los jugadores y entrenadores venían y se iban, con la mayoría de los jugadores solo permaneciendo una temporada en la NFL Europe. Equipos en Barcelona, Londres y Escocia fueron desapareciendo, convirtiendo la liga en un proyecto casi exclusivamente alemán, con la única excepción de sus vecinos de Amsterdam.
A la inversa, la NFL International Series se centra más en traer un producto de primera clase a una audencia más amplia, lo que les ha ayudado a vender en su totalidad cada encuentro, con la excepción del jugado durante la acortada temporada del NFL Lockout. Está hecha a lo grande, más al estilo de una pequeña Super Bowl. Tienen zonas de fans, ceremonias prepartido, actuaciones en el descanso etc. Ha sido muy bien recibida, y la NFL quiere expandir su presencia en Londres todavía más. A día de hoy ofrecen tres partidos de la liga regular cada año, y la intención es la de expandir el número de duelos a cuatro para el año 2016. Uno de los factores principales en la creación de la NFL International Series en Londres ha sido el probar la viabilidad de establecer una franquicia asentada allí, y creo que han probado que es un escenario muy posible.
Es estupendo ver el acuerdo de asociación entre los Oakland Raiders y los Swarco Raiders – es el primero acuerdo de esta clase y realmente una buena cosa para el football internacional. Sin embargo. No veo a la NFL como una liga que busque asociaciones con clubes nacionales europeos en el futuro, ésta no es realmente su manera habitual de operar. Su objetivo claro es expandir la presencia de su liga, más que la del football en general. Por esto organizaciones como USA Football han llenado el vacío que había en este campo.
En su sitio de web, se habla del largo camino del football para establecerse como primer deporte de los americanos, y se intuye su crecimiento exponencial de popularidad en Europa con las nuevas tecnologías y el acceso a los partidos de la NFL a través del NFL Gamepass o determinado canales nacionales. A pesar de esto hoy en día no parece que el football pueda hacer sombra a otros deportes más arraigados en Europa como el fútbol o el baloncesto. En su opinión atendiendo al caso americano ¿ Cuál puede ser la clave de la transición del football de deporte minoritario a deporte de masas?
Creo que empieza, principalmente y sobretodo, en la creación de un producto de calidad. Ahora mismo el Football en Europa está en fase de crecimiento, pero require un esfuerzo unificado y objetivo para poder otorgarle un estatus relevante dentro del mercado europeo. Equipos y federaciones han luchado durante años para lograr tener un objetivo claro de lo querían hacer del Football en sus respectivos países, es por esto que existe “The Growth of a Game”. Estamos uniendo partidarios del Football bajo una misma causa: elevar el nivel del Football en Europa hasta el punto de que pueda rivalizar con cualquier país del mundo.
Habiendo establecido este objetivo específico, el próximo paso es mejorar el profesionalismo y la viabilidad financiera de los clubes y federaciones a lo largo y ancho del continente europeo. Ahí es donde nuestra empresa de consultoría, Premier Class Consulting, trabaja. Ayudamos a equipos y ligas a convertirse en empresas sostenibles e implementamos nuevos modelos de beneficio, mientras construímos una estructura directiva organizada, responsable y eficiente.
La siguiente etapa es identificar y eliminar las reglamentaciones que impiden el crecimiento del Football. En algunos países el estatus aficionado es obligatorio. En otros son la cuotas de jugadores extranjeros importados, las que son obligatorias. Para competir con un deporte como el fútbol, necesitamos tomarnos más en serio a nosotros mismos.
Tiene experiencia como jugador y entrenador en la liga belga de football. Qué nos puede decir del football belga, de su nivel deportivo y organizativo, y de su crecimiento en los últimos años.
La liga belga esta llena de jugadores dedicados y con talento, sin embargo sufre de la falta de sostenibilidad y de un esfuerzo unificado. Debido a que es una nación dividida lingüísticamente, se dedican muchas esfuerzos a identificar las cosas que los separan, en lugar de reconocer todo lo que tienen en común. Por esta razón, en Bélgica no se ha llegado a crear un formato con dos divisiones, y se ha decidido finalmente por una liga de una division, dividida en dos conferencias, separadas obviamente por razones lingüisticas.
El problema que esto presenta es que en una liga de 18 equipos, solo 3 ó 4 pueden luchar por el campeonato cada año. Nuevos clubes se crean a menudo, pero tienen muchas dificultades para competir con los grandes clubes ya establecidos, y muchas veces desaparecen. La Liga ganaría si se convirtiese en una competición con dos divisiones, lo que amortiguaría el golpe para los nuevos equipos, y les daría una oportunidad de competir con equipos de nivel similar. Bélgica se moverá sin ninguna duda en esa dirección, ya que hay muchas personas inteligentes y dedicadas a este deporte en el país para no progresar de esta manera.
La competición conocida como BIG6 reúne a varios clubes de élite europeos y ha nacido en el año 2014, y su vida se prolongará en el año 2015 como se ha anunciado recientemente. Los clubes invitados compiten en ella, además de sus competiciones domésticas ¿Puede ser el germen de una futura liga profesional de football paneuropea? Y si fuese así cree posible competir en dos ligas de alto nivel a la vez como es la GFL y la BIG6?
La BIG6 es un paso en la buena dirección. Si consigue tener sostenibilidad creo que puede llegar a cambiar el escenario del Football en Europa. Pienso que algunos equipos tienen la capacidad de disputar sus competiciones nacionales y la BIG6 al mismo tiempo, sin embargo los equipos tienen que tener cuidado para no forzar demasiado con el riesgo de lesiones que ello conlleva. Los Black Panthers de Praga jugaron dos partidos el mismo día el año pasado, ganando ambos. A pesar de ser este un dato impresionante, se expuso a los jugadores a un riesgo innecesario. La seguridad no se debe tomar a la ligera en nuestro deporte. La liga austríaca es un buen ejemplo de estas buenas prácticas, jugando una competición de 8 partidos por temporada y manteniendo la flexibilidad necesaria para permitir a sus equipos competir en ligas internacionales.
Tratemos el tema de los jugadores americanos. Algunos países restringen su entrada, otros imponen cuotas. ¿ Cuál es su opinión al respecto? ¿Qué política debería seguirse para aumentar el nivel del football europeo y al mismo tiempo permitir el acceso a jugadores locales a los equipos?
Estoy definitivamente a favor de que exista una reglamentación apropiada en el football. Dicho esto, estoy en contra de reglas que impidan el crecimiento del deporte. Algunos países como los Estados Unidos han creado ligas profesionales y aficionadas, representadas a través de la NFL y las ligas colegiales de la NCAA respectivamente. Sin embargo si quieres que se te tome en serio como organización profesional necesitar firmar a jugadores importados. Poner un límite al número de extranjeros en una liga nacional, limita la calidad del juego en esa liga y priva a los jugadores nacionales de competir con y contra los mejores jugadores del mundo. Algunos están preocupados con que la eliminación de las cuotas para los jugadores importados, provocaría que los clubes europeos de repente serían invadidos por jugadores americanos, pero esta preocupación a día de hoy no tiene fundamento. Hoy en día en Europa, ningún club será ni finaciera ni comercialmente viable para llenar un equipo europeo exclusivamente de jugadores americanos, por lo que esta opción no es una veradera amenaza. Además, si el nivel de la liga aumenta, también lo hará el de los jugadores nacionales. Finalmente, el nivel de juego de los jugadores nacionales se acercará al de los jugadores importados, y un balance apropiado empezará a tomar forma. Creo que la instauración de cuotas es unos de los principales inhibidores del crecimiento del Football en Europa. Cuanto antes eliminemos estas cuotas, antes el Football crecerá en Europa. Solo tenemos que esperar a un acto de valentía de alguna liga que decida ir en esta dirección, y el resto seguirá este camino sin lugar a dudas.
En su blog se habla de atraer sponsors al football, y del buen rendimiento que supone para cualquier empresa una pequeña inversión para atraer mayor visibilidad, y habla de que para atraer sponsors un club debe ser serio y crear una experiencia diferente a todo aquél que se acerque al campo de juego. ¿ Cuáles son las claves para llegar a esto?
La gente solo te tomará lo serio que te tomes a tí mismo, así que tu primer paso debe ser el establecer una organización profesional. Lo que significa hacer todo desde lo más pequeños detalles de manera correcta, delegando responsabilidades a las personas correctas, siendo responsable de tus acciones, y demostrando que tu organización es financieramente seria. La siguiente etapa es resaltar las características atractivas del Football. Enfatizar cosas como la mentalidad de que el grupo es lo primero, la estrategia, el ritmo y la intensidad del juego, la inclusión que fomenta y los valores que promociona (dureza, trabajo de equipo, compromiso, unidad, fuerza etc). Finalmente, los equipos deben diferenciarse entre ellos. Quizás dispones de un gran jugador nacional o importado entre tus jugadores, quizás tu club se centra sobretodo en los programas de cantera, o logras atraer gran número de espectadores a los encuentros. Cualquiera que sea tu fuerza, identifícala y explótala a tu favor.
¿Cuándo nace la idea de dedicarse a la promoción del Football en Europa? ¿Cuál es su experiencia al respecto estos últimos años?
La idea nació mientras trabajaba con Warren Moon, uno de los mejores quarterbacks de todos los tiempos, y miembro del Pro Football Hall of Fame. Quería utilizar el conocimiento y la experiencia que había adquirido trabajando en deportes y entretenimiento, así como el tiempo que pasé jugando y entrenado en Europa, para contribuir al crecimiento del Football de alguna manera. Jugar y vivir en Europa ha supuesto un profundo impacto en mi vida, en la persona que soy hoy en día, y quería ayudar a ser un factor en el aumento del nivel del juego aquí, y dar más visibilidad a este gran deporte que es el de todos nosotros.
Ahora mismo se encuentra escribiendo un libro sobre el crecimiento del football en Europa, que se publicará en el año 2017. ¿Nos puede adelantar un poco en que va a consistir su libro y que carácter le quiere dar?
Sin querer desgranar demasidado el proyecto, el libro se centra en el pasado, presente y futuro del Football en Europa, con enfasis sobretodo en los dos segundos. Gran parte del libro está dedicado al momento actual del Football y tendremos cantidad de historias increíblemenete interesantes. Cada país europeo donde se juega al Football tendrá su espacio en el libro. Tengo muchas ganas de compartir esta historia con todo el mundo.
