Gli sport perdono ulteriori praticanti quando questi ragazzi raggiungono i 18 anni, età che coincide con il diploma e con l’inizio degli studi universitari. Non più ragazzini ormai, questi giovani adulti devono affrontare nuove sfide accademiche e possono accedere al mondo che li circonda senza limitazioni, avendo la libertà di seguire qualsiasi percorso che li interessi.
Tuttavia, i ragazzi olandesi non solo gli unici ad affrontare questo tipo di cambiamenti a livello sociale e scolastico durante la loro crescita. In Europa, i loro coetanei affrontano un percorso simile. Come se non bastasse, il flag favorisce il senso di fiducia tra compagni di squadra, dal momento che ogni componente della squadra ha un compito preciso e che gli altri dipendono dalla sua capacità di portarlo a termine per poter eseguire il loro. Infine, il football americano è indifferente al complesso della superstar, secondo cui le squadre vengono costruite attorno a singoli atleti, come succede invece frequentemente nel calcio, nel basket e in altri sport.
Non è un caso quindi che i Dominators tengano dei clinic di flag football in numerosi centri di detenzione giovanile olandesi.
Sono 10 anni che i Dominators svolgono questo lavoro, e la loro idea è diventata sempre più inclusiva e ad ampia portata. “Vogliamo fare in modo che il flag diventi uno sport convenzionale nelle scuole olandesi”, spiega Tersteeg, “vogliamo che una persona interessata al football possa praticarlo alle scuole superiori, all’università, e anche dopo”. La trasformazione di questa idea da sogno in realtà non è un traguardo lontano quando esistono società che lavorano come i Dominators.
