Pour ceux qui gèrent les terrains, le Football américain ne représente qu’une broutille. Par ailleurs, la culture dominante d’autres sports, avec cet inaltérable attachement au football et au rugby, rend l’Europe encore imperméable à l’influence de ce sport extraordinaire. Les sports nationaux plongent profondément leurs racines dans des allégeances culturelles, et l’Europe ne fait pas exception. Pas étonnant, dans ces conditions, que parmi les meilleurs athlètes en devenir du continent, presque aucun ne souhaite renoncer aux promesses offertes par les sports dominants que sont le football et le rugby, pour rejoindre ce jeune mouvement.
Comment se fait-il, dans ces conditions, et alors que presque toutes les équipes de Football américain en Europe en sont encore au stade de développement, qu’une équipe de Vienne pleine d’ambition professionnelle ait choisi de reverser des centaines de millers de ses précieux euros aux victimes de violence domestique ? Pourquoi en France, dans un pays où le Football américain est généralement bien présent et très compétitif, une équipe a-t-elle consacré d’importantes ressources pour créer un internat afin d’accueillir des jeunes défavorisés de Tahiti, lesquels vivront une expérience profonde en venant à Paris pour jouer au Football américain avec leurs soeurs — oui, leurs soeurs —, et leurs frères français ? Pourquoi dans la lointaine contrée d’Eidsvoll, en Norvège, un coach a-t-il décidé de fonder une organisation à but non lucratif afin de créer une équipe de Football américain dans les bidonvilles de Nairobi ?

Les Vienna Vikings font partie des plus grandes équipes d’Europe, rivalisant saison après saison au sein de la Ligue autrichienne avec les meilleures équipes, et terminant aux premières places. Lorsqu’on lui demande quelles sont ses ambitions pour l’équipe, le président des Vikings, Karl Wurm, s’étonne presque de cette question et répond immédiatement : « Etre la meilleure équipe d’Europe, bien sûr. »
Chaque année depuis 1999, cependant, les Vikings organisent un match, le Charity Bowl, dont les bénéfices sont reversés à des oeuvres caritatives, les premières bénéficiaires étant des organisations viennoises dédiées aux victimes de violence domestique. S’ils agissent ainsi, explique M. Wurm, c’est parce que « les grandes organisations ont une grande responsabilité sociale ». Cette approche est désintéressée et vraiment admirable.

Une autre grande équipe européenne, le Flash de La Courneuve, fait des merveilles dans la périphérie de Paris. Le general manager de cette équipe, M. Bruno Lacam-Caron, décrit combien « l’esprit qui sous-tend ce projet du Flash est de bouleverser la vision des choses, briser les stéréotypes, défier les préjugés ». Le club du Flash met cet esprit en action de multiples façons.
Déjà, le Flash est l’un des premiers clubs de Football américain de France à avoir créé une équipe féminine. Selon M. Lacam-Caron, il y a encore 3 ans, le Flash avait à peine assez de joueuses pour monter une équipe. Aujourd’hui, ce sont plus de 40 joueuses qui sont inscrites sur la liste de l’équipe féminine du Flash — on y compte une avocate, une fonctionnaire de police et 5 enseignantes, parmi tant d’autres professions représentées. Ce succès a donné l’exemple, et des équipes féminines ont éclos à travers toute la France. En 3 ans de promotion du Football américain féminin, ce sont près de 7 équipes qui s’affrontent aujourd’hui rien que dans l’agglomération parisienne, et il est prévu que ce chiffre dépasse la vingtaine l’année prochaine. M. Lacan-Caron décrit avec enthousiasme la passion de ces Françaises pour ce sport et jubile de voir le Football américain en Europe être devenu un sport mixte.
Par ailleurs, puisqu’il est apparemment « interdit » pour un club de Football américain en Europe de faire don d’équipements à un autre club, le Flash donne les équipements qu’ils n’utilisent plus à un club qu’ils affectionnent particulièrement, les Golden Eagles, en Côte d’Ivoire. Le club de La Courneuve y envoie avec ses équipements des coaches pour entraîner les coaches des Golden Eagles, le tout, gracieusement.
Le Flash est aussi en train de créer un internat pour faire venir des joueurs de Tahiti en France, où ils pourront être scolarisés et jouer pour le club — là encore, gratuitement. Cela s’apparente à un programme de bourse créé par M. Lacam-Caron, déjà prévu pour 5 Tahitiens, avec un financement qui devrait bientôt permettre à 5 autres jeunes de venir.
Peut-être que l’exemple le plus parlant de l’action du Flash pour contribuer au changement social est le nouveau diplôme aujourd’hui en cours de création. Le Flash travaille activement avec des professeurs d’université, des fonctionnaires de police, des éducateurs professionnels et des psychologues afin de mettre en place un environnement d’étude et un diplôme inédits, pour les éducateurs sociaux comme pour les éducateurs sportifs. Le programme d’étude se concentrera sur la diversité, la conscience internationale et les sensibilités culturelles. L’objectif de ce cours d’étude est de contribuer à « bouleverser les choses afin de faire progresser le vivre-ensemble », comme le dit M. Lacam-Caron, décrivant le but sous-jacent de tous les acteurs du club.

M. Greg Kleidon, un enseignant qui coach les Eidsvoll 1814 en Norvège, a également fondé une organisation à but non lucratif, la Golden Leaf Academy. C’est encore lui qui décrit le mieux ce club impressionnant : « Notre objectif principal est le développement de la jeunesse. Nous cherchons à apporter aux jeunes athlètes les connaissances et les bases appropriées pour qu’ils développement et conservent un mode de vie sain et positif. Notre slogan — « Sois actif » — nous résume parfaitement. Il signifie être actif au sein de la société, dans la famille et sur le terrain. Nous voulons que chacun fasse jaillir le meilleur de lui-même, et nous pensons qu’avec les directives et encouragements de nos coaches et de nos préparateurs mentaux, c’est quelque chose que nous pouvons réaliser. »
Mais les ambitions de M. Kleidon et de la Golden Leaf Academy dépassent très largement les Eidsvoll 1814 et la jeunesse norvégienne. Un projet en cours s’adresse à l’une des jeunesses les plus défavorisées au monde. En banlieue de la ville de Nairobi se trouve un des bidonvilles les plus vastes et miséreux qui aient jamais existé — Kibera. L’objectif à court terme de la Golden Leaf Academy est de créer une équipe de jeunes à Kibera, et plus important encore, de connecter cette équipe à celle des Mighty Nyati, une équipe senior liée à l’Université de Nairobi. Non seulement les jeunes de Kibera bénéficieront de leur participation à une équipe de Football américain dynamique et compétitive, mais ils seront également directement connectés à l’université, un lien qui représentera une motivation supplémentaire pour exceller dans les études, afin de réaliser le rêve de poursuivre des études supérieures.
