A decisão de excluir este esporte demonstra uma visão bastante limitada, pois a inclusão do futebol americano não só o colocaria em patamar internacional e daria oportunidade de crescer, mas também atrairia a enorme audiência dos fãs do futebol americano para os jogos olímpicos, que, de outro modo, não assistirão. As estimativas variam, mas mais de 120 milhões de pessoas assistiram ao Super Bowl 50 entre o Denver Broncos e o Carolina Panthers – não é uma audiência que deva ser menosprezada. Vincular qualquer cultura ao nome de qualquer esporte irá naturalmente induzir aos fãs alguns estereótipos preconcebidos, positivos ou negativos, sobre a referida cultura. No entanto, esta situação poderia ser facilmente contornada identificando o futebol americano com um nome diferente, como gridiron, coisa que culturas anglo-saxônicas como a Grã-Bretanha e a Austrália já fizeram. O Japão estará sediando os jogos olímpicos de 2020 e rotineiramente termina no top 4 das competições internacionais de futebol americano, portanto, a localização obviamente também não é o fator determinante.Talvez o Comitê Olímpico Internacional veja o esporte como desproporcionalmente dominado pelos Estados Unidose outros países como Canadá, México e Japão. Mas, o mesmo pode ser dito sobre outros esportes como beisebol, basquete e softbol, e todos os três estarão nos jogos olímpicos de Tóquio.
Então quais são as verdadeiras razões para a exclusão de futebol americano dos Jogos Olímpicos? De fato, há uma razão que faz sentido aqui, e isso é uma questão difícil de aceitar, pois, de alguma maneira, nós somos os responsáveis:
O único motivo pelo qual o nosso grande esporte não foi incluído nos Jogos Olímpicos é a falta de visão e direção da Federação Internacional de Futebol Americano (IFAF).
A IFAF, que seria para o futebol americano o que a FIFA é para o futebol, na verdade, é muito diferente da FIFA. Por exemplo, em Dezembro de 2014, o comitê organizador local para a Copa do Mundo de Futebol Americano de 2015 em Estocolmo anunciou que os fundos que havia levantado para o evento misteriosamente desapareceram, uma empresa fictícia foi identificada neste desaparecimento, e o presidente da IFAF e a Federação de Futebol Americano da Suécia (SAFF) estava deixando o cargo alegando motivos de saúde. O torneio foi transferido de última hora para Canton, Ohio e o número de equipes participantes caiu de 12 para 7, mas as coisas tomaram um rumo ainda mais bizarro desde então. A IFAF anunciou a renúncia do Comissário em Abril de 2015, mas, no dia seguinte, o anúncio foi retirado do website e afirmaram que ele foi vítima de uma espécie de golpe de Estado. Coincidentemente, isso tudo aconteceu ao mesmo tempo em que o futebol americano foi cogitado para ser selecionado como um dos esportes olímpicos. Não se sabe ao certo quem apresentou, em última instância, a candidatura formal ao Comitê Olímpico Internacional, mas pode-se afirmar que a situação instável em que o futebol americano se encontrava não ajudou para que a decisão fosse favorável.
