Kim Ewé: Dalla Danimarca all’Italia per costruire squadre di football

Ho capito subito quanto Kim Ewé prendesse sul serio il suo ruolo di allenatore quando posticipò un’intervista per finire di analizzare i filmati della sua squadra. “Devo assicurarmi che il programma dell’allenamento sia pronto”, disse, “Uso moltissimo Hudl, lo conosci? È la mia linfa vitale.”
Se ancora non credete alla crescita del football, considerate che Ewé, cittadino danese, al momento sta allenando i Castelfranco Cavaliers, una squadra italiana situata poco fuori dalla mitica Venezia.
Ma Ewé non è lì in vacanza: ha del lavoro da fare.
Nonostante abbia solo 42 anni, Ewé circola nell’ambiente del football da anni. Ha iniziato a 15 anni come ricevitore dei Copenaghen Vikings. Dopo la chiusura dei Vikings, sua madre Sanne (che avrebbe poi fondato la Danish American Football Federation) decise di fondare i Copenaghen Towers, dove Ewé ha giocato e allenato per sei anni. Da giocatore, Ewé ha vinto coi Towers 4 Mermaid Bowl consecutivi tra il 1992 e il 1995. (Il Mermaid Bowl prende il nome da “La Sirenetta”, racconto dello scrittore danese Hans Christian Andersen). In quegli anni cominciò anche la carriera da allenatore e, finché rimase nei Towers, ne guidò la squadra Under 19.
Nel 1996, dopo essersi trasferito a Helsingør, 45 km a nord della capitale, Ewé divenne l’head coach dei Kronborg Knights, una squadra di belle speranze. Tra il 1997 e il 1999, sotto la sua guida, i Knights arrivarono al Mermaid Bowl per tre volte consecutive, ma senza mai riuscire a vincerlo. Nello stesso periodo, la sua carriera da allenatore prese il volo, quando nel 1998 Ewé venne nominato allenatore dei ricevitori della nazionale danese.
Nel 2000, a soli 26 anni, venne nominato head coach degli Avedøre Monarchs, una squadra di football a 9 situata alla periferia di Copenaghen. I Monarchs vinsero subito il campionato, per poi salire di due categorie quando vennero inseriti nella Nationalliga. Nel 2001, il primo anno nel campionato maggiore, i Monarchs arrivarono al Mermaid Bowl, uscendone sconfitti dai Roskilde Kings per 17-10. Ewé si ritirò dal football giocato quello stesso anno, per concentrarsi sulla carriera da allenatore. La decisione diede subito i suoi frutti l’anno successivo, quando i Monarchs vinsero il loro primo Mermaid Bowl 28-14 contro i Roskilde Kings. A soli 29 anni, Ewé aveva vinto il suo primo Mermaid Bowl in veste di head coach.
Dopo aver vinto tre titoli consecutivi coi Monarchs, Ewé accettò di diventare l’head coach dei Søllerød Gold Diggers, una squadra situata a nord di Copenaghen. “I Gold Diggers erano una squadra da poco promossa nel campionato di Seconda Divisione”, spiega Ewé, “mi piaceva come si stavano muovendo. Mi piace costruire squadre, e l’aria professionale che si respirava era quello che stavo cercando”. Dopo due stagioni senza vittorie, i Gold Diggers al primo anno sotto la guida di Ewé vinsero la Seconda Divisione, per poi venire promossi in Nationalliga e perdere il Mermaid Bowl contro i campioni in carica, i Triangle Razorbacks, la stagione successiva. Ewé era così riuscito a portare due differenti squadre dalle serie minori alla finale del campionato maggiore.
Nel 2014 Ewé lasciò i Gold Diggers, dopo aver vinto due titoli su cinque finali disputate, una EFAF Cup nel 2012 e aver perso nei quarti di finale dell’Eurobowl 2013 contro i Vienna Vikings.
Nel 2011 Ewé è stato eletto nella Hall of Fame danese come giocatore e dal 2008 è defensive coordinator e assistant head coach della nazionale danese.
Ai tempi dei Gold Diggers, Ewé riceveva un rimborso spese, ma nessuno stipendio. Dopo aver deciso di dedicarsi a tempo pieno alla carriera da allenatore, Ewé iniziò a cercare lavoro in Danimarca e negli Stati Uniti. Fu durante quel periodo che i Castelfranco Cavaliers lo contattarono tramite Europlayers. Ad oggi, i Cavaliers militano nella Seconda Divisione italiana e puntano alla promozione in Prima Divisione. “Avevano apprezzato il mio curriculum e pensavano che fosse interessante avere un allenatore europeo. Li ho incontrati e ho constatato che erano un’organizzazione di qualità”. Dopo alcune trattative, Ewé e i Cavaliers firmarono un contratto da un anno, con un accordo verbale per allungarlo di altri due anni.
“Invece di giocare per una pizza, alleno per una pizza”, scherza Ewé, facendo riferimento al romanzo di John Grisham (Amazon: USA/UK/FR/ES/DE/IT). Oltre a Ewé, lo staff dei Cavaliers è composto da due allenatori italiani e da un americano che vive in Italia. “Mi piace avere uno staff di piccole dimensioni, perché mi permette di sviluppare meglio sia gli allenatori che i giocatori, una cosa che mi piace molto fare.”
Ewé allena seguendo una filosofia originale: “Non si riduce tutto al vincere. Vincere titoli non è mai stato il mio obiettivo principale. Il mio obiettivo principale è far migliorare i giocatori e gli allenatori. Il nostro mantra di squadra è molto semplice: migliorare. Se avendo questo atteggiamento vinceremo un campionato, tanto meglio”.
Prima dell’arrivo di Ewé, i Cavaliers non avevano mai vinto in casa. Alla prima partita di Ewé, i Cavaliers hanno sconfitto i rivali Vicenza Hurricanes per 34-8, interrompendo la striscia negativa.
La squadra, esistendo solo da quattro anni, aveva molto da imparare. “Avevano molte cattive abitudini e dovevano imparare ad allenarsi in modo corretto”, spiega Ewé, “erano abituati a mettersi casco e paraspalle e giocare tra di loro per due ore. Dopo aver inserito un programma di allenamenti ben definito e aver istruito i giocatori, i risultati sono stati impressionanti”.
“Siamo abbastanza bravi sui lanci. Siamo un po’ piccoli in linea, ma compensiamo mettendoci tanto cuore. Al momento non abbiamo giocatori stranieri, ma in futuro chissà”.
“È stato abbastanza semplice trasferirmi qui. In Italia del nord c’è una mentalità simile a quella tedesca e scandinava. Lo scoglio più importante è stata la lingua, che sto ancora imparando. Ai ragazzi ho detto: “Dovete migliorare in inglese, e io devo migliorare in italiano”. Mi sto impegnando a mantenere quella promessa.
Castelfranco Veneto si trova in una posizione unica: è a 45 km dagli affascinanti canali di Venezia e dalle spiagge del Mediterraneo, oltre a essere a solo un’ora e mezza dalle Alpi. “Sono andato a sciare qualche volta nei fine settimana”, precisa Ewé, “è proprio un bel posto”.
Oltre ad aver creato future opportunità per sé, Ewé ha tracciato la strada per i danesi interessati a diventare allenatori professionisti. “Amo il football e il mio obiettivo principale è far sì che si sviluppi. Inoltre, devo comportarmi a modo, perché, ovunque io vada, rappresento la Danimarca. Il mio sogno è allenare negli Stati Uniti”.
Anche se Ewé non abita più in Danimarca, ha sicuramente lasciato il segno. “Kim è quasi un’istituzione qui”, spiega Thomas Pederson, head coach degli Aarhus Tigers, “allena la nazionale e organizza i corsi per allenatori, oltre ad aver aiutato molte squadre. I risultati parlano da soli: ha avuto successo in tutte le squadre che ha allenato. Sarà un peccato non vederlo sulla sideline in Danimarca, ma credo sia fantastico che abbia avuto l’opportunità di allenare all’estero. Gli auguro di avere successo anche in Italia.”
Con un allenatore di questo livello, i Cavaliers possono solo crescere. (I Cavaliers nel 2015 sono arrivati fino ai quarti di finale della Seconda Divisione, dopo aver chiuso la stagione regolare con 6 vittorie e 2 sconfitte).
