Encerrar a NFL Europa foi uma boa estratégia?

Fundada em 1989 e originalmente chamada de World League of American Football (Liga Mundial de Futebol Americano), a NFL Europa era uma liga de desenvolvimento da NFL, com jogos de primavera e teve a sua primeira temporada de jogos em 1991. A liga foi formada com equipes da Europa e dos Estados Unidos e desde o seu início teve que lidar com grandes problemas, em particular a falta de interesse do público que atraia um pequeno número de espectadores. Em 1992, após ter completado apenas duas temporada, a liga encerrou, mas retornou em 1995 com 6 equipes, todas elas europeias. A liga mudou o nome de novo, em 2006, e passou a ser chamada de NFL Europa para refletir as línguas locais. Em 2007, enfim, a liga encerrou suas atividades definitivamente.
Equipes europeias, tais como o London Monarchs, o Barcelona Gradons e o Frankfurt Galaxy estavam entre os membros fundadores da liga e, em 1995, o Amsterdam Admirals, Rhein Fire (Düsseldorf) e Scottish Claymores (Edimburgo) se juntaram a essas equipes. A liga acabou após a temporada de 2007 e não houve nenhuma tentativa séria de criar uma substituta desde então.
É fácil criticar esta escolha, uma vez que os fãs do futebol americano na Europa estavam – e ainda estão – desapontados, pois a liga não teve tempo suficiente para se desenvolver. No entanto, algumas coisas interessantes começaram a acontecer desde que a NFL Europa acabou.
Para começar, a NFL seguiu com o seu compromisso de promover a sua imagem na Europa, tanto que instituiu a NFL International Series imediamente após o término das atividades da NFL Europa. O futebol americano na Europa tem crescido muito ao longo dos anos, mesmo com o término da NFL Europa. Muito disso tem a ver com o aumento do interesse do público em âmbito nacional, na maioria dos países europeus, bem como com a possibilidade de acessar as transmissões da NFL nos canais locais ou através da internet. O avanço da tecnologia e a conectividade apenas tem reforçado o status da National Football League fora dos EUA e não há nenhum lugar no mundo onde este esporte esteja crescendo mais rápido do que na Europa. Aos poucos, os jogadores europeus também começaram a aparecer na NFL, sendo alguns destaques: Sebastian Vollmer (Alemanha), Sebastian Janikowski (Polónia), Michael Roos (Estónia), Margus Hunt (Estónia), Osi Umenyiora (Inglaterra), Zoltan Mesko (Roménia) e Lawrence Tynes (Escócia).
