Un “walk-on” è un giocatore senza borsa di studio per meriti sportivi, che è stato ammesso all’università per meriti accademici, e che si è guadagnato un posto in squadra superando un provino.
Nonostante Rust avesse evitato di rivelare il suo passato prima di partecipare ai provini dei Barracuda, i suoi nuovi compagni di squadra avevano già capito, grazie a internet, di aver scoperto una potenziale stella.

“Ma sapevano già tutto prima che io me ne accorgessi”, spiega Rust ridendo, “Avevano guardato alcuni miei filmati di quando giocavo al liceo per capire chi ero, e sapevano già più di quanto gli avessi raccontato io”.
La differenza tra lo sport universitario inglese e quello americano, però, era evidente.
Nello sport universitario inglese mancano non solo i proventi delle dirette televisive e l’attenzione dei media, ma anche gli spettatori e i campi. Addirittura sport più popolari come il calcio e il rugby si giocano davanti a poche manciate di amici e parenti su normali campi da gioco invece che in stadi colmi di spettatori.
Rust, che quando giocava a football all’Università del Wisconsin entrava in campo davanti agli 80.000 spettatori del Camp Randall Stadium e in stadi addirittura più grandi, apprezza entrambi gli estremi.
“Giocavamo davanti a 80.000 spettatori urlanti. Erano tutti vestiti di rosso e facevano un casino impressionante”, ricorda Rust, “lo adoravo. Non mi interessava giocare o meno, era stupendo farne parte”.
Nonostante i Barracuda avessero solo 70 giocatori a roster, a differenza dei più di 100 dei Badgers, Rust spiega che i legami tra i giocatori sono più solidi in Europa che in una squadra NCAA. “Ai Badgers leghi solo con certe persone, solitamente i tuoi compagni di reparto o le persone con cui vivi. In Inghilterra è tutto molto più piccolo e il gruppo è molto più compatto. Mi piace: ti fidi di tutti e tutti si fidano di te”.
All’Università del Wisconsin, Rust era il quarterback di riserva e faceva parte dello “scout team”, dove simulava di essere il quarterback degli avversari dei Badgers, per allenare la difesa titolare. “Uno dei quarterback che ho impersonato è stato Taylor Martinez, dell’Università del Nebraska, per esempio”, ricorda Rust.
“Era un bel vantaggio poter giocare coi Badgers”, spiega Rust, che ritornerà all’Università del Wisconsin per completare gli studi, ma non per giocare a football. “Alla fine del terzo anno delle superiori, c’erano alcune università interessate a me, ma subii un infortunio al ginocchio prima dell’ultima stagione e persi l’occasione. Le università interessate a me facevano parte della Ivy League, e forse non avevo il talento per ricevere una borsa di studio da una squadra di Division I. Ma verso la fine dell’anno parlai con i Badgers e mi diedero una possibilità”.
La decisione di abbandonare il Midwest per andare a ovest aveva una motivazione accademica: “Volevo andare via di casa e viaggiare, ma è stata la qualità dell’istruzione a portarmi all’Università del Wisconsin”, precisa Rust.
Dopo aver accettato di giocare con i Barracuda, Rust non sapeva cosa aspettarsi ma di sicuro ha apprezzato la natura competitiva del campionato universitario inglese.
“Non sapevo cosa aspettarmi. Non sapevo se il livello di gioco sarebbe stato come quello del liceo, se avrei sottovalutato i giocatori o se avremmo avuto un roster numeroso. Ma il livello della competizione è stato valido. È stata partita vera con tutte le squadre e non c’è stato un solo giorno in cui avremmo potuto giocare senza impegnarci e vincere comunque.
“Il livello di gioco è più alto di quello di un liceo americano. A casa, ho giocato a football fin da bambino: invece di una palla da rugby o da calcio, avevo una palla da football in mano. Credo che negli Stati Uniti venga tutto più naturale e ci sia più fluidità nel gioco, ma l’impegno che mettono qui in Inghilterra è molto più alto rispetto a quello che si mette al liceo, e credo che amino questo sport molto di più di quanto lo facciamo noi, perché non lo danno per scontato”.
Jimmy Anderson, head coach dei Barracuda, ha descritto Rust come un normale membro della squadra, a parte “il braccio potente e quello strano accento”, ma ammette di essere soddisfatto di ciò che l’ex QB NCAA ha portato alla squadra.
“Ci ha portato molte opzioni e modi innovativi di pensare. Gli studenti dell’Università di Bristol sono intelligenti, quindi capiscono le cose rapidamente. È stato divertente anche per me, come offensive coordinator, avere un nuovo “giocattolo” con cui sbizzarrirmi negli schemi”.
Anderson, che ha giocato ed allenato per più di 17 stagioni, racconta che Rust ha dovuto adattarsi e limitarsi alle cose semplici, ma che è stato una presenza rassicurante in campo. “Avere un playbook che è un quarto di quello a cui sei abituato può essere frustrante, ma qui funziona così. Nonostante tutto, Clay ci ha portato nuovi schemi e abbiamo potuto fare più cose del solito.
