Per quanto piacevole, pochi americani hanno la possibilità di realizzare questo sogno, data la natura estremamente competitiva della lega e i pochi posti disponibili. Per la maggior parte dei giocatori non è un’ambizione realistica.
L’assoluta improbabilità che un finlandese arrivi in NFL rende la storia di Seppo Evwaraye ancora più straordinaria.
Evwaraye è nato a Vasaa, in Finlandia, da madre finlandese e padre nigeriano. Poco dopo la sua nascita la famiglia si trasferì in Nigeria, dove vissero fino alla morte del padre Frederick, quando Seppo aveva 5 anni. Sirpa, la madre, riportò la famiglia in Finlandia subito dopo, dove Seppo passò il resto dell’infanzia.
Da giovane, Evwaraye non faceva sport. “Fino ai 12-13 anni non ero interessato allo sport”, ricorda, “iniziai a giocare a football grazie a mio fratello più grande, che al tempo giocava coi West Coast Vikings. Iniziai col flag football perché non c’erano squadre giovanili di tackle football. A quei tempi, si pensava che il football fosse troppo pericoloso per chi aveva meno di 16 anni.”
La vita di Evwaraye cambiò completamente con il suo sedicesimo compleanno. “Una volta messo casco e paraspalle, è stato amore a prima vista,” spiega. “Finalmente avevo trovato uno sport che dava importanza ai ragazzi corpulenti. Non era necessario avere un determinato fisico. Non bisognava essere piccoli o magri per essere bravi. Esistevano ruoli per i giocatori che avevano più peso che coordinazione. Venivo anche da un background interrazziale, e nel football questo veniva accettato senza problemi. In squadra c’erano giocatori di etnie diverse, e non ebbi difficoltà a inserirmi.”
Evwaraye era veramente grosso: 195 cm per 145 kg. Prima di raggiungere quelle dimensioni, Seppo aveva capito che per migliorare come giocatore doveva andare negli Stati Uniti.
“Volevo giocare al più alto livello possibile”, racconta, “La prima cosa che feci fu trasferirmi a 16 anni per andare a giocare nei Porvoon Butchers, ai tempi una delle migliori squadre finlandesi. Dopo aver giocato lì una stagione, andai in Nebraska per giocare al liceo. Fortunatamente la scuola che frequentavo, la Laurel Concord, era abbastanza piccola per riuscire a giocare titolare al primo anno, e al contempo abbastanza grande per farmi notare dagli osservatori universitari.”
Laurel, all’incrocio tra il Nebraska, l’Iowa, il South Dakota e il Minnesota, le pietre angolari dello scarsamente popolato Midwest, era veramente piccola: quando Evwaraye si trasferì lì, contava 986 abitanti. In città c’erano zero semafori e un liceo. L’enorme Evwaraye giocò titolare in linea d’attacco e di difesa. Viveva con Jim e Carla Erwin, che lo accolsero a braccia aperte.
“Fu una grande esperienza, sono stato molto fortunato. Sono ancora in contatto con Jim e Carla, e li considero parte della mia famiglia. È stato fantastico.”
Evwaraye iniziò ad attirare l’attenzione di alcune piccole università del Midwest. Nel 2000, prima di iniziare il suo ultimo anno alla Laurel Concord, decise di partecipare a un camp estivo organizzato dall’Università del Nebraska. “Non pensavo minimamente che Nebraska potesse offrirmi una borsa di studio. Durante l’ultimo giorno del camp, mi dissero di andare nell’ufficio dell’head coach, il grande Frank Solich. Pensai subito al peggio e immaginai che Jim e Carla avessero avuto dei problemi. Andai nel suo ufficio e mi fece accomodare. Mi disse che avevo disputato un buon camp e che erano interessati a me. Ovviamente pensavo che mi avrebbero chiesto di entrare in squadra come walk-on, ma una settimana dopo ricevetti un’offerta di borsa di studio per posta”.
Evwaraye ricevette inviti da altre scuole, ma decise rapidamente che Nebraska era la scelta migliore. A quei tempi, i Cornhuskers erano secondi nel ranking nazionale e avevano la fama di allenare ottimi giocatori di linea d’attacco e di difesa. Sapeva inoltre di poter contare sull’aiuto di Jim e Carla, che vivevano lì vicino. Non voleva trasferirsi in un altro stato e ricominciare tutto da capo.
Nell’autunno del 2001 si iscrisse all’Università del Nebraska, passando il primo anno come redshirt in linea di difesa. “La differenza nella velocità di gioco era stupefacente”, nota Evwaraye, “Tutti erano grossi, veloci e forti fisicamente. Inoltre, avevano tutti una tecnica incredibile.”
Evwaraye passò il primo semestre a imparare, a diventare più forte fisicamente e ad abituarsi alla velocità di gioco. La primavera successiva giocò bene, ma in estate subì un infortunio al piede che lo tormentò per tutta la stagione. “Passai la prima stagione a lamentarmi e compatirmi. Dopo aver giocato bene in primavera, il camp d’autunno mi spezzò e non soddisfai le aspettative. Un mese fatto di due allenamenti al giorno, in attrezzatura completa, 6 giorni alla settimana, 2 ore e mezza ad allenamento. Gli altri riuscivano a farlo, io ne uscii distrutto e mi buttai giù. Una delle cose più importanti che ho imparato grazie al football è stato superare i piccoli problemi.”
Quella stagione, si ruppe la scapola facendo un placcaggio contro McNeese State: gli ci volle un anno e mezzo per recuperare. Intanto dopo la stagione 2003 Frank Solich e il suo staff vennero licenziati, una mossa giudicata discutibile ancora oggi. I Cornhuskers avevano chiuso la stagione con 9 vittorie e 3 sconfitte, e Solich in sei stagioni aveva vinto 58 partite, perdendone 19. Il direttore sportivo Steve Pederson ingaggiò Bill Callahan, ex coach NFL che era stato appena licenziato dagli Oakland Raiders dopo una stagione disastrosa da 4 vittorie e 12 sconfitte.
“Al tempo ero il terzo defensive tackle. Gli allenatori mi dissero che avevo più probabilità di giocare come tackle in attacco, dato che non c’era ancora un titolare. Nonostante fosse una transizione difficile, decisi che non sarei stato il primo finlandese ad essere arrivato così lontano senza lasciare il segno.”
Nelle sue ultime due stagioni, Evwaraye partì titolare come tackle. Giocare tutte le settimane di fronte a 85000 tifosi era un’esperienza surreale, una cosa che poteva solamente sognare durante la sua infanzia a Vasaa. Chiuse la carriera come Honorable Mention All-Big 12, Second-Team Academic All-Big 12 e Nebraska Lifter of the Year. Stava inoltre attirando l’attenzione di squadre e scout NFL, grazie alla sua combinazione di fisico, forza e rapidità.
Era il primo finlandese a giocare in Division I, ma il suo lavoro non era ancora finito. “Pensavo seriamente alla NFL. Era uno dei miei obiettivi quando ero partito dalla Finlandia. L’altro era giocare in Division I. Volevo vedere quanto lontano potevo arrivare. I miei consulenti mi dissero che al massimo avrei potuto essere scelto tra il 4° e il 7° giro, quindi dovevo fare un bel pro day.”
Il pro day di Evwaraye andò bene, e diventò la prima linea d’attacco di Nebraska a correre le 40 yard sotto i 5 secondi. Tragicamente, un errore burocratico fece deragliare i suoi piani di giocare nella NFL.
Dopo la fine dell’anno scolastico, il suo visto stava per scadere. Evwaraye doveva richiedere un visto Optional Practical Training (OPT) per lavorare per un anno negli Stati Uniti. Dopo aver firmato un contratto con una squadra NFL, la lega avrebbe potuto trasformarlo in un visto F-1, stabilizzando il suo status legale negli Stati Uniti. L’International Student and Scholar Office di Nebraska gli fornì i moduli per richiedere il visto OPT, ma purtroppo gli diedero dei moduli vecchi. Nel 2005 il costo della richiesta era 175 dollari, ma nel 2006 era diventato 180. Evwaraye inviò con la documentazione un assegno da 175 dollari, solo per vedersi negato il visto per pagamento insufficiente. Gli venne intimato di lasciare gli Stati Uniti entro alcune settimane o avrebbe rischiato di non entrare più nel paese in futuro.
“Era una situazione orribile. Fortunatamente ci fu qualcuno all’Università del Nebraska che mi aiutò e riuscì a far riesaminare la mia richiesta. Intanto ci fu il draft ma non venni selezionato, e i Carolina Panthers mi offrirono un contratto da free agent, che non potei firmare perché non avevo ancora risolto i problemi di visto. Mi offrirono 12500 dollari di bonus e una buona opportunità per cominciare, ma persi l’occasione.” Nell’estate del 2006 la richiesta venne riesaminata e accettata, ma ormai era troppo tardi. I Panthers avevano già messo sotto contratto un giocatore dell’università del North Carolina per rimpiazzarlo, ed Ewvaraye rimase a chiedersi quale fosse la prossima mossa.
“Luglio era arrivato e non sapevo cosa fare”, racconta, “Non stavo studiando e non potevo lavorare. La cosa peggiore era che non avevo neanche avuto l’opportunità di venire tagliato, in quel caso avrei avuto un finale per la mia carriera professionistica.”
La borsa di studio di Evwaraye copriva ancora un semestre, quindi decise di iscriversi ai corsi post-laurea di Nebraska. Iniziò ad allenarsi per avere un’altra chance di entrare nella NFL, e a quel punto Tony Allen, il direttore dello sviluppo dei giocatori internazionali della NFL Europe, lo contattò per offrirgli una possibilità. Nel febbraio del 2007 partecipò al training camp della NFL Europe a Tampa Bay, in Florida, e venne assegnato ai Cologne Centurions.
Evwaraye giocò bene nei Centurions, occupando il ruolo di guardia. Alla fine di quell’anno, l’ultimo della NFL Europe, in cui dovette combattere con un fastidioso infortunio alla spalla, gli venne offerto un posto nella practice squad dei Minnesota Vikings, con cui passò il resto del 2007.
“Fu una esperienza meravigliosa”, ricorda, “Quando sei lì, non riesci a godertela fino in fondo. Ho giocato insieme a grandi linee d’attacco come Matt Birk, Steve Hutchinson e Bryant McKinnie. In allenamento ho giocato tutti i giorni contro Kevin Williams e Pat Williams. Il 2007 era anche il primo anno di Adrian Peterson, quindi era una stagione speciale.”
“Stavo andando bene, gli allenatori mi facevano i complimenti. In quell’offseason avevo veramente l’opportunità di far parte del roster finale. Sentivo di avere una chance. Stavo trattando con i Vikings per ottenere un contratto di 2 anni, ma tutto finì quando scoprii di dovermi operare alla spalla che mi ero infortunato mentre giocavo in NFL Europe. Ci sarebbero voluti 5-6 mesi di riabilitazione, e appena i Vikings lo vennero a sapere decisero di prendere un’altra direzione.”
“Quella situazione mise fine alle mie aspirazioni NFL. Ci pensai su e mi chiesi se veramente volevo continuare a inseguire il sogno. Tra la fine della stagione con i Centurions e l’inizio del camp coi Vikings, avevo avuto solo 2 settimane di riposo. Ero stanco di giocare 365 giorni all’anno. Durante la riabilitazione in Nebraska feci una lunga riflessione e giunsi alla conclusione che mi andava bene chiudere così la mia carriera professionistica. Secondo me, ce l’avevo fatta. Ero entrato in uno spogliatoio NFL, avevo giocato nelle partite di preseason. In allenamento facevo il mio. Pensavo di meritarmi un posto nel roster per la stagione successiva, ma ero stanco ed ero pronto a lasciar perdere. E non avevo problemi a farlo.”
Evwaraye vede l’intera esperienza come positiva: “La storia con i Panthers è stata dura da mandare giù, perché non dipese da me. Ma mi ha insegnato ad andare avanti. Ho avuto la mia chance, anche se in ritardo rispetto a quanto mi aspettassi. Ho fatto la vita da giocatore NFL e ho visto l’interno di uno spogliatoio NFL. Pochi altri finlandesi possono dire di averlo fatto: Michael Quarshie, Klaus Alinen, Karri Kuuttila, Matti Lindholm.”
Dopo essersi lasciato i sogni alle spalle, Evwaraye si è iscritto nuovamente all’Università del Nebraska, iniziando gli studi post-laurea in Educazione Fisica e Scienze Motorie. In estate giocava in Finlandia con i Porvoon Butchers, vincendo il Maple Bowl nel 2009 e nel 2010, il suo ultimo anno da giocatore.
Dopo aver finito gli studi, nel settembre del 2011 è tornato a Vasaa, iniziando a dare una mano ai Vikings. “Il primo anno, nel 2012, l’ho fondamentalmente passato a osservare. Ho dato una piccola mano, ma dato che ero stato via per 14 anni non volevo subito un impegno a tempo pieno.”
“La mia idea di football, ovvero come dovrebbe essere fatto e che cos’è, era completamente diversa. Non è un hobby. Non giochi a football, sei un giocatore di football. Sapevo che avrei avuto delle aspettative molto alte se avessi deciso di prendere in mano la situazione. Il primo anno lo passai a pianificare. Volevo ringiovanire la squadra e renderla più competitiva. Volevo che i giocatori si dedicassero all’allenamento e alla squadra.”
Il 27 marzo 2013, la squadra pubblicò un comunicato stampa: i Vikings sarebbero diventati i Wasa Royals. Si ripartiva da capo: nuovi colori sociali, nuove maglie da gioco, nuova dirigenza, nuovi allenatori. Con Evwaraye nel ruolo di presidente e capo allenatore, i Royals hanno chiuso imbattuti il campionato di Division 2 (la terza divisione finlandese), vincendo la finale contro gli Hämeenlinna Huskies. Dopo essere stati promossi in Division I (la seconda divisione finlandese), i Royals hanno chiuso la stagione 2014 con 9 vittorie e 1 sconfitta, vincendo lo Spaghetti Bowl contro gli Hyvinkää Falcons.
I Royals avevano l’opportunità di salire nella Maple League, la prima divisione finlandese, ma hanno deciso di passare un altro anno in Division I per stabilizzare la società. “La differenza tra la Maple League e la Division I è notevole”, fa notare Ville Väänänen, dirigente della Finnish College League. “Nonostante abbiano vinto la Division I, credo che la scelta di non affrettare i tempi sia giusta. Indubbiamente il fatto di aver giocato a football ai massimi livelli ha insegnato a Seppo Evwaraye cosa serve per creare una franchigia di successo. Fortunatamente è riuscito ad applicare in madrepatria ciò che ha imparato. Per i Wasa Royals non ci sono limiti.
