I 10 Giocatori Più Famosi della NFL Europe

La NFL Europe aveva fondamentalmente due obiettivi: fare da banco prova per futuri giocatori NFL e generare interesse per il football in Europa. Anche se la lega è defunta dopo neanche vent’anni di vita, possiamo dire che la NFL ha raggiunto quegli obiettivi.
Come in ogni altra lega di sviluppo, alcuni giocatori sono riusciti a sfondare, mentre altri non ce l’hanno fatta. Diversi giocatori hanno avuto grande successo non solo in Europa, ma anche nella National Football League: tra loro c’è chi ha vinto il Super Bowl e chi si è aggiudicato il titolo di Most Valuable Player per ben due volte. Molti giocatori famosi hanno giocato in Europa, e probabilmente non sapevate che le loro carriere sono iniziate qui.
Senza ulteriori indugi, vi presentiamo i 10 giocatori più famosi della NFL Europe:
10. Jon Kitna – (QB, Barcelona Dragons)
Kitna ha cambiato diverse squadre durante la sua carriera, giocando per i Seattle Seahawks, i Cincinnati Bengals, i Detroit Lions e i Dallas Cowboys. All’università ha giocato alla Central Washington University, una scuola della NAIA (l’altra associazione che gestisce lo sport universitario, più piccola della NCAA), quindi non ha percepito una borsa di studio per giocare a football. Uscito dal college non venne selezionato al draft, ma firmò un contratto per far parte della practice squad dei Seattle Seahawks, che nel 1997 decisero di mandarlo a giocare nei Barcelona Dragons per accumulare esperienza di gioco. Nell’unica stagione in cui giocò in NFL Europe, i Dragons vinsero il World Bowl contro i Rhein Fire per 38-24 e Kitna vinse il titolo di MVP della finale. Dopo l’esperienza in NFL Europe, Kitna ha giocato per 14 anni in NFL, ritirandosi con 29.745 yard lanciate, 169 touchdown e giocando due partite di playoff. Non male per un giocatore che non ha mai ricevuto un’offerta per una borsa di studio e che non è stato selezionato al draft.
9. Ex-aequo – Terry Crews (DE, Rhein Fire) e Isaiah Mustafa (WR, Barcelona Dragons)
Nessuno dei due ha avuto una carriera da Hall of Fame, ma se parliamo di fama entrambi meritano di essere nominati. Per qualche fortunata coincidenza, entrambi hanno fatto da testimonial per Old Spice, una marca di prodotti per uomo, ed entrambi hanno giocato in NFL Europe nella seconda metà degli anni 90. Quello che li ha resi celebri è il fatto che Old Spice aveva basato le proprie campagne pubblicitarie sui loro fisici, mettendo l’enfasi su uno humour eccentrico. Chi ha visto gli spot se li ricorda sicuramente, perché tutti e due sono ingegnosi e assolutamente esilaranti.
Dopo aver giocato defensive end all’università di Western Michigan, Terry Crews venne scelto dai Los Angeles Rams all’11° giro del draft del 1991, con la scelta numero 281 (quando il draft era composto da 12 giri invece che 7). Cambiò quattro squadre in quattro anni (Rams, San Diego Chargers, Washington Redskins e Philadelphia Eagles) e nel 1995 fece una breve sosta in NFL Europe, come membro dei Rhein Fire. Dopo aver giocato ricevitore all’università di Arizona State, Isaiah Mustaf non venne selezionato al draft, e nella sua carriera quadriennale fece parte delle practice squad dei Tennessee Titans, degli Oakland Raiders e dei Cleveland Browns. Nel 1998 venne mandato in Europa per giocare con i Barcelona Dragons, e al termine della stagione ritornò in NFL.

8. Dante Hall – (KR/PR/WR, Scottish Claymores)
Dante Hall ha avuto una carriera leggendaria in NFL. Soprannominato “The Human Joystick”, è stato per 3-4 anni il miglior ritornatore della NFL con la maglia dei Kansas City Chiefs. Hall è stato anche un discreto ricevitore, mettendo la sua esplosività e il suo stile di gioco elettrizzante al servizio dell’attacco. Hall ha giocato sette anni con i Chiefs e due con i St. Louis Rams, costringendo gli avversari a preparare dei gameplan appositi per limitare le sue eccezionali capacità. 7. David Akers – (K, Berlin Thunder)
Akers giocò con i Berlin Thunder nella stagione NFL Europe del 1999, dopo aver giocato per brevi periodi con gli Atlanta Falcons, i Carolina Panthers e i Washington Redskins. Nell’autunno del 1999 ritornò in NFL, dando il via a una carriera da All-Pro con i Philadelphia Eagles. Nei suoi 17 anni di NFL, di cui 12 negli Eagles, Akers ha giocato 6 Pro Bowl, è stato votato All-Pro per 6 volte e ha partecipato ai playoff per 11 stagioni, mettendo a segno 39 field goal. Ha giocato inoltre il XXXIX Super Bowl, perdendo contro i New England Patriots. È stato inserito nel “NFL 2000s All-Decade Team” e in carriera ha battuto diversi record, tra cui quello per punti segnati in stagione da un kicker e quello per field goal segnati in una stagione. Ha anche calciato un field goal da 63 yard, secondo a pari merito nella classifica dei field goal realizzati da più lontano.
6. Brad Johnson – (QB, London Monarchs)
Johnson è stato il primo quarterback a vincere il Super Bowl dopo aver giocato in Europa. Agli inizi della sua carriera fu mandato a giocare la stagione 1995 nei London Monarchs della World League of American Football (poi ribattezzata NFL Europe). Nell’unico campionato disputato con i Monarchs, Johnson guidò la classifica dei passaggi completati con 194 su 328, 2.227 yard lanciate e 13 touchdown lanciati. Johnson ha giocato coi Minnesota Vikings dal 1992 al 1998, dal 1999 al 2000 con i Washington Redskins, dal 2001 al 2004 coi Tampa Bay Buccaneers, dal 2005 al 2006 di nuovo coi Redskins e dal 2007 al 2008 con i Dallas Cowboys. Nel 2002 ha vinto il XXXVII Super Bowl con i Buccaneers. Da titolare in NFL ha vinto 72 partite e ne ha perse 53, completando il 60% dei passaggi per 13 stagioni consecutive: un record.
5. James Harrison – (LB, Rhein Fire)
Dopo aver terminato la sua carriera universitaria a Kent State, Harrison non venne selezionato al draft del 2002. Era ritenuto troppo basso per giocare linebacker (182 cm) e troppo leggero per giocare in linea di difesa (108 kg). Agli inizi della carriera, Harrison fece la spola tra i Pittsburgh Steelers e i Baltimore Ravens, che nel 2004 lo mandarono a giocare in NFL Europe nei Rhein Fire. La squadra non giocò un gran campionato, chiudendo con 3 vittorie, 7 sconfitte e mancando la qualificazione ai playoff, ma Harrison in seguito ha avuto una carriera di successo con gli Steelers. Nei suoi 13 anni di carriera, Harrison ha messo a segno 647 placcaggi, 29 fumble provocati e 6 intercetti. Ha vinto due Super Bowl (XL e XLIII) con gli Steelers, e l’azione più bella della sua carriera è l’intercetto ritornato per 100 yard in touchdown allo scadere del primo tempo del XLIII Super Bowl. Una delle azioni più belle della storia della NFL. Il quarterback vittima dell’intercetto? Un altro ex giocatore della NFL Europe chiamato Kurt Warner.
4. Jake Delhomme – (QB, Amsterdam Admirals e Frankfurt Galaxy)
Jake Delhomme è il giocatore dei Carolina Panthers con più passaggi completati e più passaggi tentati di tutti i tempi, oltre ad aver vinto il World Bowl del 1999 con i Frankfurt Galaxy. È l’unico giocatore di questa lista ad aver giocato per più di una stagione in NFL Europe, e caso vuole che nel 1998 fosse la riserva di Kurt Warner negli Amsterdam Admirals. Agli inizi della carriera con i New Orleans Saints, Delhomme fece fatica a trovare spazio, ma nel 2003 i Carolina Panthers gli diedero l’opportunità di essere il quarterback titolare durante il suo primo anno con la squadra. Delhomme li portò al XXXVIII Super Bowl quella stessa stagione, perdendo 32-29 in una partita mozzafiato. In quella partita, Delhomme lanciò un touchdown da 85 yard per Muhsin Muhammad, record NFL. Delhomme ha chiuso la carriera con 20.975 yard lanciate e 126 touchdown lanciati.
3. William “Refrigerator” Perry – (DL, London Monarchs)
Chi ha guardato la NFL negli anni 80 sa che Perry era un fenomeno quando giocava nei Chicago Bears. Soprannominato “The Fridge” (il frigorifero), teneva fede al proprio nome, pesando 152 kg. Viene ricordato fondamentalmente per due cose: “The Super Bowl Shuffle” (un pezzo rap con annesso video creato dai Bears nel 1985) e un touchdown su corsa durante il XX Super Bowl. I Bears del 1985 sono una delle squadre più famose della storia: vinsero il Super Bowl schiacciando i New England Patriots col risultato di 46-10, dopo aver perso una sola partita in tutto il campionato. 2. Adam Vinatieri – (K, Amsterdam Admirals)
La NFL Europe ha scoperto alcuni grandi kicker (David Akers, Lawrence Tynes, Chris Hanson, ecc.), ma nessuno è al pari di Adam Vinatieri. Considerato da molti il miglior kicker della storia della NFL e indubbiamente il più affidabile nei momenti fondamentali, Vinatieri ha vinto 4 Super Bowl, giocando da protagonista in ognuno di essi. È il primo kicker ad aver vinto 4 Super Bowl, e in 2 di essi ha calciato il field goal vincente. Nel 1995 Vinatieri giocò nella WLAF con gli Amsterdam Admirals, arrivando al World Bowl, poi perso contro i Frankfurt Galaxy. Oggi Vinatieri gioca con gli Indianapolis Colts, ma tutti lo ricordano per le 10 stagioni di successo con la maglia dei New England Patriots.

Nessun altro giocatore viene associato alla NFL Europe come Kurt Warner. Nel 1998 Warner, dopo aver passato anni nell’oscurità giocando con gli Iowa Barnstormers in Arena Football League e facendo il commesso in un alimentari durante l’offseason, venne ingaggiato dai St. Luois Rams e immediatamente spedito a giocare negli Amsterdam Admirals. In quell’unica stagione, Warner guidò la classifica delle yard e dei touchdown su passaggio. La stagione che giocò coi Rams nel 1999 fu leggendaria. Dopo l’infortunio al titolare Trent Green in preseason, Warner lo sostituì, concludendo la stagione con 13 vittorie e 3 sconfitte e guidando i Rams al Super Bowl. Quell’anno vinse il titolo di MVP del campionato e del Super Bowl. Nel 2001 vinse di nuovo il titolo di MVP del campionato ma perse il Super Bowl all’ultimo secondo contro i New England Patriots. Dopo un inizio fulminante seguito da un crollo epico, Warner ritrovò la forma e nel 2008 riuscì quasi a far vincere il primo Super Bowl agli Arizona Cardinals, perdendo 27-23 all’ultimo secondo contro i Pittsburgh Steelers. In totale, Warner ha giocato 3 Super Bowl, vincendone uno, ha vinto due titoli di MVP del campionato e un titolo di MVP del Super Bowl, ha giocato in 4 Pro Bowl, oltre a stabilire svariati record NFL che restano imbattuti. Non male per uno che riempiva scaffali solo pochi anni prima. Alcuni dei suoi highlight si possono trovare qui.
Warner adesso è eleggibile per la Pro Football Hall of Fame, ed è probabile che ci entri al primo colpo. Se succedesse, sarebbe il primo giocatore della NFL Europe a entrare nella Hall of Fame.
