10 Consigli per Migliorare Come Allenatore di Football

La differenza tra un grande allenatore e un allenatore mediocre sta nel desiderio di migliorare costantemente. Il football americano è ricco di strategia e tecnica, di conseguenza ci sono innumerevoli modi per approfondirne la conoscenza. Inoltre, gli allenatori hanno a disposizione un numero infinito di strumenti per migliorare i propri metodi di insegnamento. 1. Impara e comprendi le regole
Avendo un ruolo di leader, per un coach è di vitale importanza studiare in maniera approfondita il regolamento: tuttavia non si tratta solamente di imparare le regole, ma anche di capire come funzionano. Devi capire come identificare un clipping, un chop block legale, una formazione illegale, ecc. all’interno del contesto di gioco. Durante la stagione i giocatori ti chiederanno spesso come viene applicata una penalità o se quello che fanno è un fallo o meno. È fondamentale essere in grado di rispondere a queste domande, altrimenti i tuoi giocatori ti vedranno sotto una cattiva luce perché non conosci le regole dello sport che insegni.
Per di più, ed è forse più importante, capire le regole è fondamentale durante la partita. 2. Guarda i filmati
In NFL, tutti i coach guardano filmati almeno 5 ore al giorno durante la stagione. C’è un motivo per cui lo fanno: perché funziona. Bill Belichick e Jim Harbaugh sono rinomati per l’infinità di filmati che guardano durante la stagione e in offseason, e non è una coincidenza che abbiano la percentuale di vittorie più alta tra gli allenatori in attività con le rispettive squadre. In NFL e in NCAA i sistemi per produrre i filmati sono molto sofisticati, e la tua squadra potrebbe averne di simili o anzi non averne affatto. Se la tua squadra non ha ancora organizzato una strategia per filmare le partite e gli allenamenti, questa situazione genera l’opportunità per farlo. Se promuovi all’interno della tua squadra una strategia per filmare allenamenti e partite, non solo il tuo sforzo verrà apprezzato, ma verrai riconosciuto come membro indispensabile del coaching staff. Fai del tuo meglio per essere parte della soluzione.
3. Trova un mentore
Stabilire un rapporto solido con un mentore è un elemento fondamentale per diventare un allenatore di alto livello in qualsiasi sport. Un mentore dovrebbe essere una persona che rispetti enormemente, che crede in valori simili ai tuoi e che trova il tempo per parlare con te. Solitamente gli allenatori sono felici di fare da mentore se vedono in te passione e competenza, e se loro stessi hanno avuto un mentore in passato. Sia che trovi un mentore nel paese in cui alleni, con cui puoi vederti tutti i giorni, o che ne trovi uno negli Stati Uniti, con cui puoi comunicare via e-mail, questi rapporti possono essere di grande aiuto per un giovane allenatore. Se alleni in Europa, ti consiglio di fare conoscenza con un allenatore di high school o di college e di contattarlo via e-mail per esprimere il tuo interesse nell’imparare da lui. Instaurare un dialogo con un allenatore di questo tipo può portarti grandi vantaggi.
Bill Parcells, uno dei migliori coach nella storia della NFL, ha fatto da mentore a grandi allenatori come Bill Belichick, Tom Coughlin e Sean Payton. Bill Walsh, il leggendario coach dei 49ers, è stato il mentore di Mike Holmgren, Jim Fassel e Dennis Green, tutti allenatori che hanno avuto successo in NFL in vari momenti della loro carriera. I miei mentori sono stati mio padre e il mio amico Jim Mora Sr., che per anni ha allenato i New Orleans Saints e gli Indianapolis Colts. I valori e i punti di vista che ho imparato da loro non hanno prezzo, poiché spesso hanno trasceso il campo da football e li ho applicati alla vita di tutti i giorni. Se hai la possibilità di trovare qualcuno che ha esperienza e voglia di darti consigli e di incoraggiarti, non ci sono limiti per la tua crescita personale e professionale.
4. Ricevi feedback da altri allenatori
All’interno del coaching staff di cui fai parte risiede l’opportunità di imparare e crescere. Chiedere un feedback agli altri allenatori su come insegni o comunichi coi tuoi giocatori ti aiuterà a perfezionare le tue abilità. Come colleghi con una visione oggettiva che vogliono vedere migliorare la squadra, spesso possono vedere cose che non riesci a vedere, poiché hanno avuto la possibilità di osservarti da fuori. Possono dirti se sei stato troppo negativo o troppo permissivo, se sei stato poco concentrato o troppo agitato, o se devi migliorare le tecniche e le strategie che insegni. Se vuoi diventare un grande allenatore, impara ad accettare le critiche: è fondamentale tenere sotto controllo il tuo ego e non ostacolarti da solo.
5. Partecipa a clinic, camp e conferenze
È uno dei modi più semplici per migliorare considerevolmente in poco tempo. Camp e clinic vengono organizzati negli Stati Uniti tutto l’anno e stanno diventando sempre più comuni anche in Europa. In uno o due giorni, puoi assorbire talmente tante informazioni da aprirti la mente e da darti una prospettiva completamente nuova. Partecipare a un clinic con allenatori di alto livello può essere un grande passo per la tua carriera di allenatore.
6. Impara nuovi drill e nuove tecniche
Con l’arrivo di piattaforme per la condivisione di filmati come YouTube, hai la possibilità senza precedenti di avere accesso a drill e tecniche da aggiungere al tuo repertorio. Impararne di nuovi darà risultati sul campo e i tuoi giocatori ne trarranno vantaggio. Nuovi drill e nuove tecniche possono essere imparate in tanti modi diversi: partecipando a clinic, camp o webinar, guardando video su YouTube o osservando altri coach allenare. Impara più che puoi, sarà un grande investimento.
7. Conosci il sistema della tua squadra
Anche se sei un coach di reparto, dovresti capire lo scopo, le potenzialità e gli obiettivi della strategia di squadra nella loro interezza. In questo modo approfondirai la tua conoscenza del football e questo ti sarà d’aiuto quando cercherai una posizione di maggiore responsabilità all’interno della squadra o quando cercherai un altro posto in un’altra squadra. Gli altri allenatori ti rispetteranno per la tua preparazione, saranno più inclini a chiederti consigli durante la partita, e la dirigenza ti prenderà in considerazione per offrirti un posto da coordinator o da head coach in futuro. Se un giorno vorrai diventare un head coach (o se lo sei già), è di vitale importanza conoscere a fondo la strategia di squadra, in modo da poter prendere decisioni ponderate e dare consigli a giocatori e allenatori in qualsiasi momento.
8. Impara ad allenare tutti i reparti
Come è importante capire la strategia di squadra nella sua interezza, è fondamentale imparare ad allenare tutti i reparti. Se non lo fai, limiterai pesantemente lo sviluppo dei tuoi giocatori. Se sei il coach dei linebacker, e vuoi anche imparare ad allenare i ricevitori, la squadra trarrà vantaggio dall’avere un coach dei ricevitori in più. In questo modo sarai un valore aggiunto per i tuoi giocatori, e potresti vedere qualcosa che il loro coach di reparto non vede. Se un giorno cercassi un posto migliore nella tua squadra o in un’altra, è importante avere nel curriculum la capacità di allenare diversi reparti. Quasi tutti gli allenatori NFL hanno allenato diversi reparti prima di entrare nella lega, poiché avevano bisogno di flessibilità per riuscire a occupare i posti che si liberavano e poiché dovevano dare alla squadra molto di più che allenare solo un reparto. Il modo migliore per tenersi aggiornati è guardare il football NFL e di college, preferendo il secondo, in quanto gli allenatori di college sono più propensi a provare cose nuove.
Il mio amico Sam Farmer, giornalista che segue la NFL per il Los Angeles Times, ha detto “Se non ti piace il cambiamento, ti piacerà ancora meno essere irrilevante”. Ha proprio ragione: se usi sistemi antiquati e non ti tieni aggiornato, sia nel football che nella vita, ti farai una reputazione di essere una persona che non sta al passo coi tempi.
10. Impara a valutare i tuoi giocatori
Uno degli errori più comuni che ho visto fare dai coach è cercare di imporre ai giocatori il sistema che conoscono meglio. È la ricetta per farsi licenziare. Il tuo obiettivo è mettere in campo i migliori 11 giocatori a ogni costo. Questo significa che devi valutare i tuoi giocatori e trovare una strategia e una formazione che approfittino del talento che hai a disposizione. Se hai degli ottimi ricevitori, non dovresti giocare Wing-T. Se hai dei cornerback che sanno marcare a uomo con efficacia, non dovresti giocare Cover 2. Se hai un ottimo tight end, non dovresti giocare con 4 ricevitori. Non imporre ai giocatori un sistema che non si addice alle loro caratteristiche. È tua responsabilità applicare le precedenti lezioni per approfondire la tua conoscenza, e inserirli in un sistema che tiri fuori il meglio di loro. Un allenatore intelligente sa come adattare un sistema ai giocatori, piuttosto che adattare i giocatori al sistema.
BONUS: Sii di larghe vedute
Una cosa che si impara allenando, come la si impara giocando, è che c’è sempre qualcuno migliore di te. Che abbiano creato un nuovo sistema d’attacco o di difesa, sviluppato una struttura organizzativa unica nel suo genere, o assunto i migliori assistant coach disponibili, questi allenatori possono insegnarti qualcosa di nuovo. Queste cose si possono imparare direttamente (parlando con questi coach di persona o via e-mail, partecipando a clinic, ecc.) o indirettamente (guardando giocare le loro squadre in TV o dal vivo, leggendo articoli su di loro, ecc.), e dovresti cercare di assorbire quante più informazioni possibili.
