Limitare i Giocatori Stranieri: Giusto o Sbagliato?

I New York Yankees, la squadra più titolata della Major League e una delle franchigie sportive di maggior valore economico di tutti i tempi, hanno rivoluzionato non solo il baseball, ma tutto lo sport professionistico. Tra il 1947 e il 1962, gli Yankees vissero un periodo di dominio senza precedenti, vincendo 10 World Series su 13 e trasformando profondamente il panorama del baseball professionistico.
Come ci riuscirono? Semplice, erano la franchigia più ricca del mondo, quindi comprarono e svilupparono i migliori giocatori disponibili. In quel periodo, leggende come Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Whitey Ford, Joe DiMaggio e Yogi Berra giocarono negli Yankees.
Dopo il dominio degli Yankees, sorse l’alba di una nuova era: quella dell’innovazione. Le squadre iniziarono a pensare fuori dagli schemi, sviluppando sofisticati sistemi di scouting, allevando i giovani nelle minor league, e attirando i migliori giocatori del mondo con tecniche mai viste prima.
Intanto, la MLB iniziò a ideare dei metodi per mantenere l’equilibrio tra le squadre senza dover proibire l’ingaggio dei giocatori più forti. Nel 1947, Jackie Robinson divenne il primo afro-americano a giocare nella MLB, e nel 1959 tutte le squadre schieravano giocatori di qualsiasi etnia. Nel 1965 venne indetto il primo Draft, che permetteva alle squadre di avere le stesse possibilità nello scegliere i migliori giocatori. Nel 1968 venne costituito il Central Scouting Bureau (poi diventato Major League Scouting Bureau nel 1974) per aiutare le squadre nelle operazioni di scouting. Nel 1994, la MLB istituì il revenue sharing, un sistema in cui i profitti delle squadre delle grandi città venivano distribuiti alle squadre delle piccole città. Infine, nel 2003 venne approvata la luxury tax. “Conosciuta anche come Competitive Balance Tax, la luxury tax è la punizione inflitta alle squadre che spendono troppo. Anche se nella MLB non è stato fissato un tetto salariale, la lega multa in maniera salata le squadre con un monte stipendi alto, dando loro una buona ragione per controllarsi.” Squadre come i New York Yankees, i Los Angeles Dodgers e i Boston Red Sox non hanno problemi a pagare la tassa: se lo possono permettere. I soldi incassati dalle multe vengono reinvestiti nel fondo giocatori (50%), nell’Industry Growth Fund (25%) e nello sviluppo del baseball nei paesi che non hanno squadre nelle scuole superiori (25%). Oggi, Gli Yankees hanno il secondo monte stipendi più alto della lega, e dal 2000 hanno vinto solo una World Series. I Los Angeles Dodgers, la squadra col monte stipendi più alto, non vincono una World Series dal 1998.
Ma perché parlare di baseball su un sito dedicato alla crescita del football? Perché possiamo imparare una lezione, ovvero che ci sono modi migliori per mantenere l’equilibrio tra le squadre senza inibire la crescita dello sport. Nel caso della MLB, il cambiamento è scaturito da un lungo periodo di dominio degli Yankees, che ha portato innovazione e maggiore efficacia.
In Europa, non esiste una definizione unica di “giocatore straniero”. Nella maggior parte dei casi, un giocatore viene definito straniero se non possiede il passaporto di uno dei 28 paesi dell’Unione Europea. Quasi tutti i paesi hanno stabilito un numero massimo di giocatori stranieri che si possono avere a roster. Inoltre, esiste anche un numero massimo di giocatori stranieri che possono essere in campo nello stesso momento. I giocatori stranieri vengono in prevalenza dal Nord America e sono di livello più alto rispetto ai colleghi europei, perciò le federazioni hanno imposto un limite per mantenere l’equilibrio tra le squadre. Paesi come la Gran Bretagna sono arrivati a proibire di pagare i giocatori, imponendo l’amatorialità.
Al momento c’è una discussione in atto su quanto sia corretta questa situazione, poiché le federazioni nazionali credono che questo sia il metodo migliore per mantenere l’equilibrio tra le squadre nelle proprie leghe. A essere sinceri, non si raggiunge un equilibrio vero e proprio, poiché si limita il numero di giocatori di alto livello. Questo modo di pensare viene incoraggiato dalle squadre delle piccole città che faticano a competere con le squadre delle grandi città.
Invece, queste regole fanno capire che non abbiamo voglia di innovare. Squadre e federazioni stanno dimostrando che preferiscono essere mediocri allo stesso modo che cercare di essere grandi allo stesso modo. Piuttosto che migliorare, preferiamo che le altre squadre si abbassino al nostro livello. Questa tattica continuerà a farci rimanere nell’amatorialità e sta indubbiamente intralciando la crescita del football in Europa.
Poi ci chiediamo: perché non attiriamo l’interesse degli sponsor? Perché ci sono pochi spettatori alle partite? Perché i media non ci prendono sul serio? Bè, perché siamo noi in primis a non prenderci sul serio. Vogliamo competere con calcio, rugby, basket e hockey ma non riusciremo né a raggiungere né a sorpassare questi sport finché ostacoleremo la crescita del football in Europa.
Sono quattro le affermazioni principali a favore della limitazione dei giocatori stranieri. Esaminiamole insieme.
1. “Limitare i giocatori stranieri aiuta a mantenere l’equilibrio del campionato”
Se vogliamo fare questa affermazione, possiamo anche dire il contrario: togliere il limite agli stranieri migliora l’equilibrio del campionato. Vi faccio un esempio. Prima che iniziassi a giocare nei Brussels Bulls nel 2008, la squadra aveva perso tutte le partite e si era ritirata a metà del secondo campionato. La stagione successiva, i Bulls iniziarono a ingaggiare giocatori stranieri, candidandosi immediatamente per i playoff. In breve tempo i Bulls, da essere ultimi e incapaci di finire un campionato diventarono una delle squadre più competitive del campionato, grazie soprattutto all’aiuto di giocatori stranieri. Tutto ciò ha avuto un effetto a lungo termine: le giovanili dei Bulls hanno vinto due campionati (dovuti in parte agli insegnamenti dei giocatori stranieri che facevano da allenatori) e la squadra senior è arrivata al Belgian Bowl nel 2013, al sesto anno di attività. Il divario sarebbe stato molto più grande se i Bulls non avessero inserito dei giocatori stranieri per aumentare il livello di gioco e se i giocatori locali non avessero avuto la possibilità di migliorare allenandosi con loro.
Si potrebbe anche dire che mettere un limite agli stranieri impedisce di avere un campionato equilibrato perché le squadre in difficoltà non possono puntare a vincere. In realtà, il limite può aumentare il divario tra le squadre di alta classifica e quelle di bassa classifica, perché si limitano le possibilità di migliorare. A volte bisogna dare una scossa al sistema per creare più competizione e dare l’opportunità ad altre squadre di giocare ad alto livello.
2. “Limitare i giocatori stranieri aiuta lo sviluppo dei giocatori locali”
È una delle linee di pensiero più diffuse, anche se categoricamente falsa. Se servono prove, basta guardare il calcio. I campionati di Spagna e Germania sono pieni di giocatori stranieri e vantano alcune delle migliori squadre al mondo, ma questo non ha impedito alle loro nazionali di migliorare. Infatti, negli ultimi sei anni, Germania e Spagna hanno dominato la scena internazionale, vincendo in totale 2 Coppe del Mondo e due Campionati Europei.
Perché? Perché hanno creato un ambiente in cui i giocatori locali affrontano avversari di alto livello, senza dover lasciare il proprio paese. Ricordate, per migliorare bisogna giocare contro avversari più forti. Il modo più opportuno per farlo è prendere i migliori giocatori di football del mondo e far sì che i vostri giocatori giochino ai massimi livelli.
Chiariamoci, gli stranieri non andranno a occupare tutti i posti disponibili a roster. I migliori giocatori europei hanno il talento per giocare ed essere competitivi, e non sarà mai fattibile a livello finanziario o commerciale avere più giocatori stranieri che giocatori locali. Non stiamo incoraggiando in alcun modo il crearsi di questa situazione, quindi non c’è da preoccuparsi.
Inoltre, non va dimenticato il valore insito nello schierare giocatori provenienti da paesi diversi: creare uno spogliatoio multiculturale tutti possono imparare l’uno dall’altro. Per i vostri giocatori è un valore aggiunto sia dentro che fuori dal campo.
3. “Limitare gli stranieri impedisce alle squadre di spendere troppo e fallire”
Spesso le aziende falliscono perché sono gestite male o perché non sono economicamente sostenibili. Ma non esiste un limite di spesa per le imprese solo perché alcune sono gestite male. A volte è un bene che le aziende falliscano, eliminando così quelle gestite male e che non funzionano. In questo modo il mercato cresce in maniera più regolare. Come risultato di tutto ciò, nascono nuove aziende, più competitive, meglio organizzate e più attente al lato fiscale. Le organizzazioni sportive funzionano allo stesso modo. Spesso ci sono squadre che non riescono a gestirsi e che sono costrette a chiudere. Quando succede, vediamo la situazione in maniera negativa, ma in realtà può essere l’opportunità per altre squadre, meglio gestite e più competitive, di emergere.
Limitare il numero dei giocatori pagati non risolverà i problemi delle squadre in difficoltà. I problemi resteranno, indipendentemente dal fatto che si paghino 0 giocatori o se ne paghino 100. Comunque, se una squadra si iscrive a un campionato formato da squadre solide economicamente e che competono ai massimi livelli, deve essere sicura di quello che sta facendo e deve essere ben gestita. Limitare gli stranieri per evitare problemi economici avrà più probabilmente un effetto negativo.
4. “Solo negli sport come il calcio si possono abolire le limitazioni, perché loro hanno i soldi”
Falso. Questi sport riescono ad ottenere il sostegno delle multinazionali perché ingaggiano i migliori giocatori a livello internazionale, non il contrario. Le multinazionali non sponsorizzano le squadre amatoriali perché il ritorno sugli investimenti è minimo. Vogliono investire su squadre che hanno richiamo internazionale, che ingaggiano giocatori stranieri famosi, che possono vantarsi di avere i migliori giocatori e allenatori locali, e che giocano ai massimi livelli.
Allo stesso modo, ai tifosi piace vedere una squadra che gioca ad alti livelli o a livello professionistico. I tifosi guardano lo sport per divertirsi, ed è molto probabile che questo accada se il livello della competizione è alto. I soldi veri arrivano da tifosi e aziende, ma non possiamo attirarli se non mettiamo in campo il miglior prodotto possibile.
Se alcune squadre sono economicamente superiori rispetto alle altre, si potrebbe trovare un metodo per limitare le loro spese, non il numero dei giocatori che pagano. Introdurre un sistema di distribuzione dei profitti invece di eliminare la competizione. Innovando, abbiamo molte più possibilità per far crescere il football. Non fossilizziamoci sulle solite idee.
