Il flag football: uno strumento per avvicinare i più giovani al football americano

Quando dico che a 22 anni ho già nove stagioni di football alle spalle, la gente mi guarda sorpresa e stupefatta, senza sapere che ho iniziato la mia carriera giocando a flag football. Anche se ci ho solo giocato per un anno, lo considero uno dei passi più importanti del mio sviluppo come giocatore completo di football.
Qualcuno potrebbe sostenere che, per chi gioca linebacker o in linea d’attacco o di difesa, non abbia molto senso giocare a flag football prima di passare al tackle football. Ciononostante, posso testimoniare che il flag può essere di grande aiuto a tutti i giocatori, indipendentemente dal ruolo in cui giocano, e che potrebbe diventare inoltre una piattaforma per acquisire nuovi talenti e per aumentare l’interesse del pubblico europeo verso il football americano.

Queste regole permettono ai bambini di giocare già da piccoli, senza aver paura di venire colpiti da avversari che sono il doppio di loro.
E questo ci riporta alla mia prima osservazione: nel flag football il contatto è estremamente limitato o, nel caso del flag 5 contro 5, è inesistente. Potrebbe sembrare stupido togliere al football l’elemento che lo caratterizza, ovvero il contatto fisico, fatto di colpi e di scontri, ma un bambino non ha le caratteristiche fisiche per poterne sopportare i rigori.
In questo modo i bambini possono concentrarsi sui particolari e sul migliorare la tecnica. I ricevitori e i defensive back, i cosiddetti skill players, ne traggono un grande vantaggio. Immaginate un ricevitore che può concentrarsi sul correre la propria traccia senza doversi preoccupare di trovarsi davanti un cornerback in copertura press o di venire colpito da un linebacker. Allo stesso modo, dato che non può colpire il ricevitore, il defensive back deve affidarsi al gioco di gambe e alla tecnica per poterlo marcare. I giocatori non possono dominare fisicamente l’avversario, ma devono affidarsi ai fondamentali per riuscire a fare la giocata.
Enfatizzare la tecnica invece del contatto fisico non solo protegge i bambini durante lo sviluppo, ma dà loro il tempo di concentrarsi sullo schema chiamato e sul cosa fare nelle situazioni di gioco. Se ti preoccupi troppo del tuo assegnamento mentre ti schieri, la tecnica ne risente negativamente.
La possibilità di lavorare sulla tecnica mi è stata di grande aiuto quando ho fatto il salto dal flag al tackle football. Nonostante avessi solo 14 anni e non avessi ancora il fisico di un giocatore di football, potevo battere i miei avversari grazie alla tecnica e alla mia conoscenza tattica. La situazione si è ripetuta quando sono passato dalla giovanile alla squadra senior. Nonostante avessi solo 18 anni, partii subito titolare. Per pura coincidenza, l’altro ricevitore titolare aveva giocato a flag football con me. Grazie ai nostri anni di esperienza, eravamo molto più capaci dei nostri compagni ventenni che però non avevano mai giocato a flag football o in giovanile.
Il modello che prevede l’utilizzo del flag football giovanile per migliorarsi atleticamente ha grandi potenzialità. Non solo può aiutare ad alzare il livello di gioco in Europa, ma può dare la possibilità a giovani promesse di giocare in una high school o di ottenere una borsa di studio universitaria negli Stati Uniti.
I vantaggi del contatto limitato non si fermano qui. La ragione principale per cui il placcaggio è vietato nel flag football è la limitazione degli infortuni. In Europa si pensa che il football sia uno sport duro, in cui persone stupide trovano qualsiasi scusa per farsi male. Paragonato al calcio, lo sport preferito nel vecchio continente, il football è violento e brutale: è comprensibile che i genitori non vogliano che i figli giochino a football ma facciano altri sport. Il flag football dà a quei genitori preoccupati un’alternativa, permettendo loro di guidarli nei primi passi delle loro carriere sportive, facendoli giocare a uno sport in cui possano migliorare tecnicamente in un ambiente sicuro. Dopo tutto, proteggere i nostri bambini dagli infortuni dovrebbe essere il nostro obiettivo principale, dato che impiegano più tempo a recuperare da un infortunio e hanno un rischio maggiore di subire danni a lungo termine. Secondo uno studio condotto nel 2013 da Safe Kids Worldwide, in cui sono stati monitorati bambini dai 7 ai 17 anni per un anno, il 14% degli infortuni sportivi erano traumi alla testa. Lo studio ha rivelato che il rischio di commozione cerebrale è molto più alto nel tackle football (11 commozioni ogni 1000 atleti) rispetto ad altri sport (per esempio, 3 nel basket e 4 nel calcio).
Oltre a proteggere i giovani atleti dagli infortuni causati da forze esterne, il flag football fornisce gli strumenti per prevenire gli infortuni non provocati dal contatto fisico. La chiave, come spiegato precedentemente, è il lavoro specifico che si fa sulla tecnica. Tuttavia, i vantaggi del flag football non si limitano all’aspetto atletico e alla prevenzione dagli infortuni. Esiste un aspetto sociale che non si può ignorare: dare la possibilità di giocare ai ragazzini sovrappeso o che mancano di coordinazione. Questi ragazzini di solito vengono snobbati a causa della loro mancanza di atletismo, e spesso in altri sport il livello di gioco è talmente avanzato che per loro è troppo difficile recuperare. Il flag football può dare a questi ragazzini l’opportunità di far parte di una squadra. In Europa, considerando che si inizia a giocare tardi a football, anche chi non ha mai fatto sport può diventare un atleta. Questi ragazzi fanno nuove amicizie che non avrebbero mai potuto fare e sperimentano il valore del lavoro di squadra, un principio fondamentale che vale anche fuori dal campo.
Questa prospettiva funziona non solo con i bambini sovrappeso o senza un passato sportivo, ma anche con le minoranze. Gli sport di squadra hanno sempre unito persone di paesi, etnie e religioni diversi. Dati i grossi flussi migratori degli ultimi anni, il flag football potrebbe essere uno strumento importante per aumentare la tolleranza e l’integrazione.
Se le squadre europee riuscissero a riconoscere il potenziale del flag football e a fare in modo che sempre più ragazzi e ragazze ci giocassero, potrebbero aiutare sempre di più la crescita di questo grande sport. Il flag football promuove una diminuzione dei rischi di infortunio, un aumento di giovani giocatori di talento, e il miglioramento della società, grazie alle lezioni di disciplina, rispetto e lavoro di squadra che impartisce.
