Gli Hastings Conquerors: un nuovo modello per le squadre di football?

Prima di costituirsi ufficialmente nel 2013, gli Hastings Conquerors si erano guardati intorno per capire che strada prendere a livello societario. Dopo aver consultato altre squadre inglesi, scelsero una strada completamente differente.
I Conquerors, una delle franchigie più giovani del Regno Unito, sono riusciti a mettere in piedi una struttura societaria efficiente e a diventare un punto di riferimento per la comunità di Hastings.
Ma come hanno fatto in così breve tempo?
I Conquerors sono la prima squadra di football del Regno Unito (e forse d’Europa) organizzata come una cooperativa di proprietà dei tifosi. Questo significa che la squadra non è di proprietà di un solo individuo, ma di un vasto gruppo di azionisti, e che le azioni sono acquistabili pubblicamente. Le azioni sono state acquistate da tifosi, giocatori, dirigenti, e anche da appassionati americani e norvegesi, che si identificano con la natura cooperativa della squadra. L’interesse per i Conquerors è altissimo.
Tutto è cominciato come in tante altre squadre nate negli ultimi anni: tramite Facebook. “Negli anni 90, quando ero un bambino, guardavo gli highlight di Channel 4”, spiega Chris Chillingworth, Presidente e Fondatore degli Hastings Conquerors, “da quel momento in poi ho sempre seguito il football, ma solo nel 2010, lavorando coi Maidstone Pumas, la mia passione è iniziata a crescere. Non mi interessava giocare, volevo allenare e aiutare la squadra in altri modi”. Nonostante Chillingworth si divertisse coi Pumas, fare il pendolare da Hastings rendeva le cose più complicate. Nel 2013 decise quindi di creare un gruppo Facebook per scoprire se a Hastings c’erano persone interessate a fondare una nuova squadra.
Già dai primi mesi le risposte non tardarono ad arrivare. “Quasi da subito, tutti chiedevano quando avremmo fatto il primo allenamento”. Nel marzo 2013, Chillingworth decise di organizzare un ritrovo informale in un parco della città, anche se non sapeva cosa aspettarsi. “Mi chiedevo se sarei stato l’unico presente ma, quando arrivai al parco in anticipo di 15 minuti, c’erano già 20 persone pronte per cominciare”. Il ritrovo doveva durare un’ora, ma andò avanti per quattro. Alla fine, i presenti si chiesero in che modo potevano dare una mano: un commercialista si offrì di tenere la contabilità, chi aveva un pullmino si offrì di portare i giocatori ad allenamento e alle partite, alcuni erano allenatori certificati in altri sport. Incredibilmente, 27 persone si presentarono quel giorno, e così nacque una nuova squadra.
“La mia più grande preoccupazione era di non essere in grado di insegnare il football”, racconta Chillingworth, “fortunatamente alcuni dei ragazzi più vecchi avevano giocato negli anni 80 e si proposero come allenatori”. Il gruppo cominciò a vedersi con regolarità, e iniziò a dividersi le responsabilità.
“Ho sempre voluto che la squadra seguisse il modello cooperativo”, continua Chillingworth. “Mentre facevo ricerche per capire come strutturare la squadra, studiai le squadre di football e di calcio del Regno Unito. Raccolsi informazioni sull’Ebbsfleet United F.C. e sull’F.C. United of Manchester per capire il concetto di ‘cooperativa’. I risultati raggiunti dall’F.C. United in così breve tempo mi spinsero a seguire quella strada”. L’Ebbsfleet United è una squadra di calcio del Kent che un tempo permetteva ai propri membri di decidere acquisti e cessioni dei giocatori, prezzi dei biglietti, budget, formazioni, tattiche, e altro. L’idea era un po’ estrema e causò diversi problemi, soprattutto perché si lasciavano prendere decisioni importanti a un gruppo di persone non qualificate.
Al contrario, l’F.C. United segue un modello più equilibrato e per questo più efficace che, dalla fondazione nel 2005, gli ha permesso di ottenere tre promozioni consecutive. Gli azionisti dell’F.C. United eleggono un consiglio direttivo che prende le decisioni più importanti. La squadra è stata fondata da un gruppo di tifosi del Manchester United, che non condividevano più le idee del club. Più recentemente, uno stadio da due milioni e mezzo di sterline è stato finanziato coi soldi degli azionisti dell’F.C. United: costruito dalla comunità, per la comunità. Un’altra squadra famosa gestita seguendo un modello simile sono i Green Bay Packers della NFL, il cui proprietario è la città di Green Bay, nel Wisconsin. I Packers sono l’unica franchigia a partecipazione pubblica tra tutti i maggiori sport americani.
Gli Hastings Conquerors sono diventati ufficialmente una società nel settembre 2013. Essendo un’organizzazione no-profit, hanno ricevuto una sovvenzione di 10.000 sterline da Sport England per pagare le attrezzature, che sono poi state affittate ai giocatori per 5 sterline al mese, dando la possibilità ai cittadini di Hastings di giocare a football a un prezzo contenuto. Il primo anno, gli azionisti pagano 30 sterline, per poi pagare un rinnovo di 10 sterline gli anni successivi. Le azioni non portano dividendi e non vengono utilizzate come investimento personale, ma rappresentano piuttosto un investimento diretto nella squadra. Alle assemblee degli azionisti, il voto di ogni persona vale uno, indipendentemente dalle azioni acquistate. Le votazioni più importanti si svolgono a novembre, durante l’assemblea generale annuale, in cui si votano i membri del consiglio direttivo, il look delle nuove divise, il costo delle azioni, e altro. Sono stati anche votati argomenti quali la creazione di un settore giovanile e di una squadra femminile. Alla prima assemblea generale annuale, gli azionisti dovevano esprimere il voto su argomenti importanti come il nome, il logo e i colori della squadra. Il consiglio direttivo è composto da 9 persone elette annualmente dagli azionisti.
Chrissy Bland, la prima azionista non membra del consiglio direttivo, acquistò la sua azione il 13 aprile 2014, il primo giorno in cui le azioni divennero acquistabili pubblicamente. Il suo fidanzato, Dean Blackburn, gioca linebacker e Chrissy è sempre stata una sostenitrice della squadra. “Ha sempre sostenuto me e i Conquerors dal primo giorno in cui ho iniziato ad allenarmi coi miei fratelli”, racconta Blackburn. Chrissy era una presenza importante per la squadra, ma nel maggio 2014 ha perso la sua battaglia contro un cancro al seno, un evento devastante per la squadra, per la sua famiglia e, soprattutto, per Blackburn. “Riusciva a tirare fuori il meglio dalle persone”, afferma Blackburn. E, cosa più importante, diventano azionisti di minoranza di una squadra sportiva, un privilegio solitamente riservato a pochi.
I rapporti per gli azionisti sono uno degli aspetti più esclusivi dell’essere azionisti dei Conquerors. Gli azionisti possono consultare documenti non disponibili al pubblico, per esempio i rapporti riguardanti il bilancio trimestrale e il settore commerciale e marketing, oltre ai rapporti degli allenatori e del presidente. I rapporti del Presidente, scritti dallo stesso Chillingworth, spiegano gli obiettivi della squadra e i loro progressi.
