Il football americano in Europa: uno strumento per incentivare il progresso sociale

In Europa, il football è ancora nel suo stadio formativo. Nonostante che molte squadre siano nate alla fine degli anni 70, che ad oggi ci siano più di 1500 squadre distribuite su 41 paesi e che la popolarità del football stia crescendo in Europa, la maggior parte delle squadre è ancora in fase di sviluppo.

Innanzitutto, i costi per i campi e le attrezzature, necessari a una squadra per funzionare correttamente, sono elevati. Per di più, cercare di ottenere un campo su cui allenarsi può diventare un’esperienza frustrante, poiché la priorità viene data alle squadre di calcio o di rugby. Allora perché, se quasi tutte le squadre europee sono ancora nella loro fase di sviluppo, una squadra di Vienna, con grandi ambizioni, ha deciso di donare centinaia di migliaia di Euro del proprio budget alle vittime di violenze domestiche? Perché in Francia, paese in cui il football è ben diffuso e altamente competitivo, una squadra ha investito parte delle sue preziose risorse per costruire una scuola, per far sì che giovani Tahitiani avessero la possibilità di trasferirsi a Parigi per giocare a football con le loro sorelle (sì, sorelle) e fratelli francesi? Perché un allenatore di Eidsvoll, nella lontana Norvegia, ha deciso di fondare un’organizzazione no-profit con l’obiettivo di fondare una squadra di football nelle baraccopoli di Nairobi?

I Vienna Vikings possono essere considerati una delle corazzate del football europeo: tutti gli anni, infatti, lottano per le prime posizioni della Austrian Football League. Karl Wurm, presidente dei Vikings, è rimasto sorpreso quando gli è stato chiesto quali fossero le ambizioni della sua squadra: “essere la miglior squadra d’Europa, ovviamente”, ha risposto senza esitazione.

Ciononostante, dal 1999 i Vikings organizzano annualmente il Charity Bowl, una partita di beneficenza i cui proventi vengono donati a società viennesi che si occupano di aiutare le vittime di violenze domestiche. Più di 40000 spettatori hanno partecipato ai 17 Charity Bowl giocati fino a ora. Fino a oggi sono stati raccolti più di 135000 Euro ma, se si prendono in considerazione il tempo, le energie e le risorse utilizzate per organizzare, pubblicizzare e giocare queste partite tutti gli anni, è chiaro che questa cifra, per quanto impressionante, non rappresenta appieno i sacrifici fatti dai Vikings a favore di questa nobile iniziativa. Nel Charity Bowl di quest’anno, i Vikings affronteranno gli Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns, una delle migliori squadre del campionato tedesco.

I Vikings vogliono diventare la squadra più forte d’Europa ma, allo stesso tempo, hanno investito energie, risorse umane e soldi per sostenere cause che non hanno nulla a che vedere con questa ambizione. L’hanno fatto semplicemente perché, come ha affermato Karl Wurm, “le società sportive forti hanno grandi responsabilità sociali”, dimostrando un altruismo veramente ammirabile.

I Flash de la Courneuve, altra corazzata del football europeo, fanno invece meraviglie nelle banlieue parigine. Bruno Lacam-Caron, general manager dei Flash, ha spiegato che “la mentalità di fondo di questo programma è di creare un modo completamente nuovo di affrontare la vita, in cui tutti gli stereotipi e i pregiudizi vengono messi in discussione”. E sono tanti i modi in cui i Flash mettono in opera queste parole.

I Flash sono stati una delle prime squadre francesi ad avere una squadra femminile. 3 anni fa, i Flash avevano a malapena giocatrici sufficienti per schierare una squadra al completo. Ora il roster conta più di 40 giocatrici, tra le quali spiccano un’avvocato, un’agente di polizia e 5 insegnanti. Il successo dei Flash ha portato alla nascita di squadre femminili in tutta la Francia: dopo aver pubblicizzato il football femminile per 3 anni, ora nella sola regione di Parigi esistono 7 squadre e per il prossimo anno le stime parlano di più di 20 squadre. Il presidente Lacam-Caron ha descritto con entusiasmo la profonda passione che le donne francesi hanno per il football, e ha espresso la propria felicità nel vedere che la crescita del football europeo è attribuibile a entrambi i sessi.

Inoltre, poiché pare che sia “contro le regole” donare le proprie attrezzature a un’altra squadra europea, i Flash donano quelle che non utilizzano più ai Golden Eagles, squadra della Costa d’Avorio con la quale sono gemellati. I Flash mandano i propri coach in Costa d’Avorio insieme alle attrezzature, così che possano insegnare agli allenatori dei Golden Eagles, gratis.

Per di più, i Flash stanno costruendo una scuola per far sì che giocatori tahitiani possano andare gratuitamente a vivere e studiare in Francia, giocando per i Flash. I Flash collaborano attivamente con professori universitari, agenti di polizia, educatori professionali e psicologi per creare un corso di studi incentrato su diversità, sensibilizzazione a livello internazionale e sensibilità culturale, al termine del quale si riceverà un diploma di educatore sociale e sportivo. L’obiettivo del corso è di favorire “un modo completamente nuovo di vivere insieme rispettandosi l’un l’altro”, che è anche l’obiettivo di fondo dei Flash come società sportiva.

Greg Kleidon, un insegnante che allena gli Eidsvoll 1814 in Norvegia, è uno dei fondatori della Golden Leaf Academy, un’organizzazione no-profit il cui obiettivo, come spiega lo stesso Kleidon, è “lo sviluppo dei giovani”. “Vogliamo dare ai giovani gli strumenti per sviluppare e mantenere uno stile di vita positivo e salutare. Tuttavia, le ambizioni di Greg Kleidon e della Golden Leaf Academy guardano oltre agli Eidsvoll 1814 e ai giovani norvegesi. Esistono già dei progetti per portare aiuto ad alcuni dei giovani più svantaggiati del mondo. Appena fuori da Nairobi si estende una delle più grandi e povere baraccopoli del pianeta: Kibera. L’obiettivo a breve termine della Golden Leaf Academy è di creare una squadra giovanile a Kibera e, cosa più importante, associare questa squadra ai Mighty Nyati, una squadra senior collegata all’Università di Nairobi. In questo modo, i giovani di Kibera avranno non solo la possibilità di godere dei benefici di far parte di una squadra di football vivace e competitiva, ma anche un collegamento con l’università, grazie al quale potranno essere stimolati a far bene a scuola per inseguire il sogno di un’educazione migliore.

Ho avuto il piacere di parlare con Karl Wurm, Bruno Lacam-Caron e Greg Kleidon, e sono qui per dirvi che questi signori sono leader di cui tutti dovremmo prender nota. Il modo in cui questi uomini utilizzano il football per raggiungere i loro scopi umanitari li rendono non solo esempi da ammirare, ma rendono anche le proprie squadre temibili avversari sul campo. Uniti dai principi della compassione per l’umanità, giocano con grande energia.

Perché i Vienna Vikings, i Flash de la Courneuve e gli Eidsvoll 1814, tra tante squadre europee, sono emersi come esempi ispiratori di società che uniscono ambizioni di successo sportivo a principi di convinzione morale?

Forse perché il football è quasi l’unico sport di squadra in cui ogni ruolo richiede un certo tipo di fisico e una certa mentalità. Non importa chi sei, in squadra c’è posto per te. Ogni ruolo richiede qualità atletiche e mentali diverse, dal kicker al defensive tackle. Forse sono questi requisiti che spiegano perché il football in Europa viene sempre più utilizzato per stimolare cooperazione e tolleranza sociale, etnica e culturale.

Forse anche perché il football in Europa è lo sport minore che lavora all’ombra dei giganti del calcio e del rugby. Ogni squadra di football nel corso della sua esistenza ha lottato almeno una volta per avere un campo, quando questi sono dovunque riservati a società di calcio e di rugby. In Europa, il football attrae quelle persone che hanno qualcosa da dimostrare, perché sono coloro che vanno avanti per la propria strada senza uniformarsi alla massa e che superano le aspettative che poi avranno successo. Chi trova difficoltà durante la propria vita sa cosa vuol dire lottare per qualcosa che ad altri viene servito su un piatto d’argento. Forse è per questo che uno sport, considerato minore se messo di fronte ai giganti del calcio e del rugby, lavori con la consapevolezza delle diseguaglianze che permeano la vita moderna.

Il lavoro di squadre come i Vienna Vikings, i Flash de la Courneuve e gli Eidsvoll 1814 va oltre lo sport: sono in prima linea per rendere il mondo un posto migliore per tutti. Il loro lavoro fuori dal campo per unire persone diverse in uno sforzo comune di bontà ci rende più sicuri in modo immediato e tangibile. Dovremmo toglierci il cappello davanti al loro esempio, non solo per rispetto, ma anche per dimostrare la nostra profonda gratitudine.

Speriamo che queste squadre possano continuare a essere un esempio per tutti noi, e che possano ispirare passione, solidarietà, tolleranza, abnegazione e lavoro di squadra. Speriamo di continuare a essere ispirati dalla leadership dimostrata da queste squadre, e dal progresso sociale che continuano a promuovere tramite questo bellissimo sport.
