Tromsø Trailblazers: Football al Circolo Polare Artico

586 km a nord di Oulu e 350 km a nord del Circolo Polare Artico, la squadra norvegese dei Tromsø Trailblazers si sta preparando a giocare il suo primo campionato. Iscritti al campionato di Seconda Divisione della Norwegian American Sports Association, ora sono i Trailblazers a essere la squadra europea più a nord.
In Norvegia si gioca a football dagli anni ’80, ma per anni tutto ha ruotato intorno a Oslo, la capitale. Con la crescita del football, altre squadre nacquero in città come Bergen, Stavanger e Trondheim, che dal 1990 al 2011 fu la squadra norvegese più a nord. Ciononostante, considerando che la Norvegia misura 2500 km di lunghezza, Trondheim si trova piuttosto a sud. Per anni, il nord della Norvegia non ha avuto una squadra di football.
È a questo punto che fa il suo ingresso Sveinung Løfadli, head coach dei Trailblazers. “Nel 2011 mi sono trasferito a Tromsø per studiare all’università” , racconta Løfadli, “sapevo che non c’erano squadre di football, quindi mi sono detto: ‘bisogna risolvere la situazione’”
Nonostante avesse solo 20 anni nel 2011, Løfadli conosceva già il football. Nativo di Trondheim, a 17 anni aveva frequentato un liceo in Nevada, entrando nella squadra di football. “Non avendo mai giocato prima, mi fecero fare il kicker: era l’unico modo per aiutare la squadra” , ricorda Løfadli, “capii però in fretta che tipo di sport era quando fui costretto a fare un placcaggio decisivo sul mio primo kickoff. Nessuno mi aveva ancora insegnato a placcare, quindi fu brutto, ma efficace”.
Al suo ritorno in Norvegia si allenò per un breve periodo con i Nidaros Domers, prima di servire nell’esercito per due anni. Fresco di congedo, decise di trasferirsi a Tromsø per studiare, e trovò in fretta il modo di portare il football con sé.
“Il nostro primo allenamento si svolse nell’ottobre del 2011. Eravamo in tre, me incluso. L’allenamento dopo eravamo in cinque. Quello successivo, eravamo in 6-7, quello dopo ancora, 9-10. Arrivati al 2013, avevamo generato abbastanza interesse e reclutato abbastanza giocatori per poterci definire una squadra. Facemmo richiesta di affiliazione alla federazione e fummo accettati nell’estate del 2013”.
Tromsø è la città più grande del nord della Norvegia, oltre a esserne la capitale. È anche la sede dell’Università di Tromsø, una delle migliori quattro università del paese e la più grande del nord. Con 13000 studenti su 72000 abitanti, gli universitari hanno un grosso impatto sulla città. I Trailblazers sono i primi a trarne beneficio: la squadra è composta per la maggior parte da studenti.

Løfadli trovò una certa affinità con Eyvin Sommerseth, un altro norvegese che aveva scoperto il football durante uno scambio in Texas. “Faccio parte della squadra dal primo allenamento nel 2011” , specifica Sommerseth, “sono il responsabile dei contatti con la federazione”. Sommerseth gioca anche centro, ed è uno dei punti attorno a cui ruotano lo sviluppo e la stabilità della squadra.
“Quando abbiamo iniziato, ci allenavamo senza attrezzatura, una volta alla settimana, su un campo di patate” , ricorda Løfadli, “non ci colpivamo al 100%, ci concentravamo piuttosto sulla posizione in cui fare il placcaggio, ma non potevamo fare altro senza le protezioni. Tutto è cambiato nel 2013, quando abbiamo comprato le attrezzature e abbiamo cominciato ad allenarci su un campo sintetico al coperto. Quando abbiamo iniziato nessuno avrebbe scommesso che ce l’avremmo fatta.”
“La squadra è composta per la maggior parte da persone senza esperienza di football” , spiega Sommerseth, “ma, dato che Tromsø è una città universitaria in crescita, ogni tanto qualcuno con esperienza si trasferisce qui per studio o lavoro, e questo ci ha aiutati. Abbiamo anche alcuni buoni atleti che vogliamo trasformare in giocatori di football di qualità. Direi che abbiamo un gruppo di giocatori di belle speranze. Il morale è altissimo e i ragazzi non vedono l’ora di scendere in campo.”
A una prima occhiata, il clima potrebbe sembrare il problema principale, ma non è così: è la geografia. Date le distanze che separano i Tromsø Trailblazers dal resto delle squadre, le trasferte diventano impegnative. I Nidaros Domers, la squadra norvegese più vicina, distano 787 km, e l’aereo è l’unica opzione percorribile per spostarsi. Le due squadre più vicine, i Rovaniemi Nordmen, in Finlandia, e i Luleå Eskimos, in Svezia, distano rispettivamente 448 e 476 km da Tromsø. Per una squadra appena fondata, questo problema potrebbe aumentare le spese esponenzialmente, rischiando di farla chiudere prematuramente. Fortunatamente i Trailblazers non sono stati gli unici a riconoscere il valore di ciò che stavano facendo.
La federazione, riconoscendo che i Trailblazers fossero il modo migliore per promuovere il football nel nord della Norvegia, ha creato una regola che richiede a tutte le squadre della Seconda Divisione (e alla federazione stessa) di contribuire a un fondo trasferte per i Trailblazers. Ogni squadra, compresi i Trailblazers, paga 19000 corone (circa 2250 euro), mentre la federazione contribuisce più di tutte le squadre messe insieme. È molto probabile che la lungimiranza della federazione norvegese porti effetti duraturi non solo nel nord della Norvegia, ma in tutta la Scandinavia.
