Pero, ¿por qué hablar de béisbol en un sitio web que está dedicada al crecimiento del fútbol americano? Simplemente porque puede enseñarnos una lección – hay mejores maneras de mantener el equilibrio competitivo sin inhibir el crecimiento de un deporte. En el caso de la Major League Baseball, un largo período de dominación de los Yankees fue el toque de atención que motivó el cambio, estimuló la innovación y la mejora de la eficiencia en el deporte del béisbol.
Las ligas nacionales de fútbol americano de Europa tienen diferentes definiciones de lo que constituye un “jugador extranjero”, sin embargo en la mayoría de los casos, un jugador extranjero es un atleta, sin un pasaporte de cualquier país de los 28 que constituyen la Unión Europea. En Europa, casi todos los países han instituido su propio límite en el número de jugadores extranjeros, que cada equipo puede tener en su plantel. Además, la mayoría de las ligas europeas tienen un límite en el número de jugadores extranjeros que un equipo puede alinear en el terreno a la vez. Como la mayoría de los jugadores extranjeros proceden de América del Norte y están, en promedio, a un nivel de juego más alto que el jugador promedio nacional, las federaciones nacionales han optado por limitar estos jugadores como un medio para mantener el equilibrio competitivo. Países como el Reino Unido han ido tan lejos como el hecho de prohibir el pago a los jugadores, imponiendo el amateurismo del juego dentro de sus fronteras.
Hay un debate en curso acerca de la imparcialidad y el verdadero valor de este asunto, ya que las federaciones nacionales han considerado que esta es la forma más fácil de promover el equilibrio competitivo en sus respectivas ligas. Para ser justos, lo que hace es semi-equilibrar la competitividad ya que limita el número de jugadores de élite que puedes tener en tu equipo. Esta idea además se ha alentado por pequeños equipos que sufren para competir contra los equipos grandes de su propia división.
Sin embargo, la mayoría de estas reglas están reconociendo una realidad muy simple: que somos demasiado perezosos a la hora de innovar. Nuestros equipos y federaciones están demostrando que han preferido igualarse por abajo, en lugar de equilibrarse por arriba. En vez de mejorar nuestros propios equipos, estamos tratando de disminuir el nivel de otros equipos al nuestro. Esta estrategia garantiza que no se salga del nivel amateur, y es la única razón que está prohibiendo el crecimiento del fútbol americano en Europa, sin lugar a dudas.
La gente se pregunta, ¿por qué no atraemos patrocinadores? ¿Por qué no tenemos más espectadores en nuestros partidos? ¿Por qué los medios de comunicación no nos toman más en serio? Bueno, pues es porque no nos estamos tomando a nosotros mismos en serio. Queremos competir con el fútbol, rugby, baloncesto y hockey por la cuota de mercado, pero no vamos a ser capaces de superar o incluso llegar al nivel de esos deportes, siempre y cuando estemos prohibiendo el crecimiento del football aquí en Europa.
Hay cuatro argumentos habituales a la hora de defender la idea de establecer cupos de jugadores extranjeros. Detallémoslos en las siguientes líneas.
1. “Las Cuotas a los jugadores extranjeros ayudan a mantener el balance competitivo”
Si vamos a hacer la afirmación de que las cuotas de importación de jugadores extranjeros animan el equilibrio competitivo, también podemos afirmar que es todo lo contrario: la eliminación de las cuotas de importación mejora el equilibrio competitivo. Déjame darte un ejemplo. Antes de mi primera temporada con los Brussels Bulls en 2008, el equipo no consiguió una sola victoria y tuvo que renunciar a la segunda mitad de la temporada. La siguiente temporada los Bulls comenzaron a fichar a varios jugadores extranjeros y casi de inmediato luchamos por un puesto en los playoffs. De ser el farolillo rojo de la clasificación y no poder aguantar una temporada completa, los Bulls se convirtieron en uno de los equipos más competitivos de la liga en un corto espacio de tiempo, en gran medida por la ayuda de los jugadores extranjeros. Esto tuvo también varios efectos – el equipo junior de los Bulls ganó varios campeonatos nacionales consecutivos (en parte debido a que sus entrenadores eran extranjeros) y el primer equipo llegó a disputar la Belgian Bowl de 2013, y esto solamente en su sexta temporada como club. Esa brecha habría sido mucho más amplia si los Bulls no hubieran traído a jugadores extranjeros para elevar el nivel del equipo, y los jugadores nacionales han podido mejorar en gran medida su nivel, al tener la oportunidad de competir contra jugadores foráneos.
Puede también darse el caso, en el que poner un límite en la cantidad de jugadores extranjeros que puedes fichar prohíba el equilibrio competitivo, ya que los equipos que estén luchando por mejorar, tienen más obstáculos a la hora de poder disputar los campeonatos domésticos. En realidad, puede hacer que la brecha se amplíe todavía más entre los equipos de arriba y de debajo de la tabla, porque limita las opciones de mejora en los equipos. En ocasiones es necesario darle un vuelco al sistema, para aumentar la competencia, y dar a otros equipos la oportunidad de mejorar su nivel de juego.
2. “Poner cuotas a los jugadores extranjeros permite el desarrollo de los jugadores nacionales”
Esta es una idea predominante, sin embargo, es categóricamente falsa. Si necesitas pruebas de que lo es, solo hay que mirar al fútbol. Países como España y Alemania tienen una afluencia masiva de jugadores extranjeros en sus ligas nacionales y cuentan con algunos de los mejores clubes de fútbol del mundo, sin embargo, esto no ha supuesto una traba para sus equipos nacionales. De hecho, el nivel ha mejorado: Alemania y España han dominado el fútbol internacional durante los últimos 6 años, acumulando conjuntamente dos Copas del Mundo de la FIFA y dos Campeonatos de Europa.
Entonces ¿cuál es la razón detrás de este aumento de nivel? Los mejores jugadores europeos tienen la capacidad suficiente para competir en cualquier parte del mundo, ante cualquier rival, y nunca será financiera o comercialmente viable tener más jugadores extranjeros que nacionales. No estamos de ninguna manera alentando esta idea, por lo que no hay por qué preocuparse.
Y también, no olvidemos el valor cultural que supone traer jugadores de diferentes países – crear un vestuario multicultural donde los jugadores puedan aprender unos de otros. Esto es directamente beneficioso para nuestros jugadores, tanto en el campo como fuera de él.
3. “Las cuotas evitan que los clubes gasten por encima de sus posibilidades o acaben en bancarrota”
Con frecuencia las empresas van a la quiebra porque están mal gestionadas y no son financieramente sostenibles. Esto no implica que debamos limitar la cantidad de gasto de todas las empresas simplemente porque algunas estén mal gestionadas. A menudo es una buena cosa que algunas empresas se vayan a la quiebra, ya que elimina las malas empresas y las ineficiencias en el mercado y permite a los mercados crecer de manera más suave. Como resultado, nuevas organizaciones, más competitivas se fundan, con mejores cimientos y una mayor responsabilidad fiscal. Las corporaciones multinacionales simplemente no sponsorizan a los equipos amateurs – ya que no recuperan su inversión. Prefieren invertir en equipos que tienen una presencia internacional, que traen jugadores de renombre extranjeros, que poseen los mejores jugadores y entrenadores locales, y que compiten al máximo nivel.
Del mismo modo, a los aficionados nos gusta ver a equipos competitivos. Los aficionados buscan entretenimiento en el deporte, y esto es más probable con buenos equipos que jueguen al máximo nivel. El dinero viene de los seguidores y las empresas, pero no podemos atraerlos de la manera en que necesitamos, si no ofrecemos un producto cualitativo en el terreno.
Si algunas organizaciones son financieramente más estables que el resto de los clubes de la liga, encuentra algún método de hacerles pagar tasas por las cantidades que gastan, no por el número de jugadores que remuneran. Promueve el reparto de ingresos en lugar de eliminar la competencia. Hay muchas más posibilidades de fomentar el crecimiento de este deporte si nos ocupamos de innovar en lugar de estancarnos.
