Ingaggiare un giocatore straniero è uno dei passi fondamentali per creare un ambiente professionale. Solitamente i giocatori stranieri provengono dal Nord America, dove il football si gioca ad alto livello e gode di una lunga tradizione. 1. Fa crescere il livello di gioco.
Nel football americano, come in tutti gli altri sport, il numero di vittorie e di sconfitte definisce se una squadra ha successo o meno. Il vostro obiettivo è vincere subito e con continuità, e potete riuscirci solo se avete a disposizioni i migliori giocatori e i migliori allenatori. Un giocatore straniero, se scelto con cura, sarà il miglior giocatore della squadra. Aggiungere un giocatore molto forte alzerà l’asticella del talento, di conseguenza la squadra migliorerà da cima a fondo. Allenandosi contro un giocatore più forte, i vostri giocatori cresceranno e si prepareranno a giocare contro giocatori stranieri dello stesso livello.
Oltre a far crescere il livello di gioco, un giocatore straniero rende la squadra più versatile. Avete un gruppo di ricevitori talentuosi ma nessun che riesca a lanciare la palla? La vostra difesa placca bene ma non riesce a mettere pressione sul quarterback? Un quarterback potrebbe risolvere il primo problema e un defensive end il secondo. Così facendo metterete in difficoltà le squadre avversarie.

2. Lo scambio culturale.
Il football è un microcosmo della vita. I valori che si imparano sono importanti non solo sul campo ma anche nella vita di tutti i giorni. Una dei punti forti di questo sport è la possibilità di conoscere altre culture. Il football è uno sport in cui tutti hanno le stesse possibilità, dove il talento regna supremo e lo status sociale non ha importanza: non importa da dove vieni, ma quanto sei forte. Nell’ultima squadra in cui ho giocato c’erano giocatori belgi, americani, marocchini, canadesi, ungheresi, spagnoli, turchi, italiani e tedeschi. Vivendo in questo tipo di ambiente si impara a rispettare le altre culture e a identificare le cose che si hanno in comune con gli altri mentre si lavora insieme verso un obiettivo comune.
Crescere giocatori è una grossa responsabilità per la vostra squadra. Non state solamente crescendo atleti migliori, ma anche persone migliori. Pensate a quanto potete imparare da un ricevitore americano, da una linea d’attacco inglese o da un linebacker tedesco. I giocatori stranieri possono essere il punto d’incontro tra i vostri giocatori e una cultura che, se non fosse per il football, non potrebbero conoscere.
3. La capacità di allenare.
Dato che spesso i giocatori stranieri provengono da paesi in cui il football è altamente sviluppato, di solito hanno una conoscenza tecnica sopra la media. Questo significa che quasi sempre possono dare una mano al coaching staff. Un giocatore straniero copre più ruoli: può fare il giocatore-allenatore nella squadra senior oppure fare l’allenatore a tempo pieno nelle giovanili. Avere in squadra un giocatore che sa anche allenare ad alto livello ha un valore immenso.
4. Più tifosi allo stadio.
I tifosi vogliono vedere uno spettacolo di prima classe. Questo significa un contorno ben organizzato e un alto livello di gioco. Se utilizzerete giocatori stranieri, il livello di gioco crescerà radicalmente e diventerà molto appetibile per gli spettatori. Ma, cosa più importante, questo dimostrerà che siete un’organizzazione professionale che vuole vincere. Ingaggiare un giocatore straniero significa uscire dall’amatorialità per entrare nella corsa al titolo o alla promozione. Come già scritto, avere un giocatore straniero aumenta la possibilità di vincere, e di solito ai vostri tifosi piacciono le vittorie…

5. Una squadra più motivata.
Se faticate ad avere tutta la squadra ad allenamento o alla partita, sappiate che non siete gli unici. Quasi tutte le squadre europee hanno questo problema. I giocatori non sono professionisti e hanno altre responsabilità e interessi: la scuola, il lavoro, la famiglia, viaggiare, ecc. Non c’è bisogno di abbattersi, è un fatto concreto. I giocatori stranieri, però, non hanno questi problemi. Ricevono uno stipendio e sono obbligati da contratto a essere presenti a ogni allenamento e a ogni partita. Di solito i giocatori stranieri, quasi inaspettatamente, sono quelli che si impegnano di più. Sono professionisti e sono orgogliosi di quello che fanno, e questo significa che chiedono il massimo a loro stessi. Poiché i giocatori stranieri vengono pagati e generalmente non hanno lavori che interferiscono col football, sono sempre a disposizione. È naturale quindi che diventino leader anche nelle squadre in cui vengono ingaggiati. Un leader in più aiuta i giocatori più giovani e meno esperti ad abituarsi al nuovo ambiente. Avere dei leader è fondamentale soprattutto nelle squadre appena nate. Se la vostra squadra senior è composta per la maggior parte da giocatori della giovanile, è necessaria una solida base di leadership. I giocatori stranieri sono una grande risorsa per stabilire questa base.
8. Rimpiazza un giocatore.
Il vostro left tackle si è infortunato prima dell’inizio del campionato? Non avete un running back di ruolo? Il vostro middle linebacker si è ritirato per stare con la famiglia? Avere questo tipo di versatilità è una grande risorsa. Se utilizzerete il talento, la versatilità e le capacità di allenare dei vostri giocatori stranieri, avrete in mano una formula vincente.
10. Attrae sponsor.
Oltre a generare entusiasmo tra giocatori e tifosi, un giocatore straniero attira l’interesse degli sponsor. Per gli sponsor la professionalità è estremamente importante: vogliono dare i loro soldi a una società ben strutturata che garantisca un ritorno di investimento, non a un branco di scappati di casa. Inoltre, vogliono sostenere una squadra vincente, e il modo migliore per diventarlo è ingaggiare giocatori stranieri. Potete anche presentare i vostri giocatori stranieri agli sponsor, creando un legame tra lo sponsor e la squadra. I giocatori stranieri possono essere i protagonisti dei press kit, delle iniziative pubblicitarie, ecc.
