Commençons tout d’abord avec peut-être l’une des mesures les plus quantifiables. Pendant toutes les années où j’ai été joueur, coach, et autour des matchs de football Américain, je n’ai jamais rencontré de quart-arrière qui n’ait pas été intelligent. J’ai rencontré ou coaché des joueurs qui n’avaient pas les meilleurs dossiers scolaires, mais les notes académiques ne sont pas forcément la meilleure indication concernant l’intelligence de quelqu’un. Les quart-arrières ont besoin de capacités mentales pour comprendre les schémas de toute une attaque tout comme ceux de la défense adverse. Ils doivent comprendre les affectations de chaque joueur offensif sur chaque action et de lire les formations défensives pour en analyser les forces et faiblesses. Entre-temps, le quart-arrière a besoin de suivre ses affectations à la lettre pour donner une chance de succès à l’action – qu’il s’agisse d’une transmission de balle ou d’une passe au loin. L’évaluation qui se rapproche le plus d’une mesure d’intelligence que détient la NFL est le test « Wonderlic » de capacité cognitive. Avant d’effectuer le draft NFL chaque année, les espoirs NFL sont administrés au test Wonderlic – un examen de 50 questions, exécuté en 12 minutes qui évalue les aptitudes du joueur à apprendre et à résoudre des problèmes. D’un point de vue physique, la précision d’une passe est de loin le plus important, un atout encore sous-estimé pour un bon quart-arrière. Plusieurs scouts NFL et directeurs généraux ont fait l’erreur dans le passé d’évaluer un joueur sur son apparence physique plus que sa capacité à jouer la position. Tim Tebow, un joueur qui a tous les autres éléments intangibles qui font de lui un grand quart-arrière, a simplement manqué la précision Elite requise pour jouer la position en NFL. A l’inverse, des quart-arrières comme Drew Brees et Michael Vick ont été capables de surpasser la taille limite (les deux mesurent environ 1.82m) grâce à une précision de lancée exceptionnelle. Un autre facteur physique des plus importants pour un quart-arrière est la capacité à lire le terrain. Le quart-arrière doit lire la couverture défensive de pré-snap, anticiper un rush, et trouver un receveur démarqué. Ceci est le plus gros ajustement pour la plupart des quart-arrières entre le college et le niveau professionnel, et beaucoup échoue ainsi. Les Defensive backs couvrent mieux leurs receveurs ce qui signifie que le créneau pour lancer la balle est réduit, le jeu est plus rapide donc les joueurs ont moins de temps pour réagir, et les hommes de ligne défensifs et les linebackers sont plus denses, plus forts et plus athlétiques. Un bon exemple de joueur ayant été à tous les égards un bon quart-arrière mais n’ayant pas réussi cet ajustement est Matt Leinart, l’ancien quart-arrière des Cardinals, Texans, et Raiders. Matt a excellé au niveau College à l’USC, en gagnant deux titres de champion national pendant qu’il jouait pour Pete Caroll, l’une des équipes de College les plus talentueuses jamais réunies. Cependant, il n’a simplement pas pu s’adapter à la vitesse du jeu en NFL et avait une grande difficulté à trouver un joueur démarqué. Sa précision et son leadership aurait seulement pu le mener très loin, et finalement sa carrière s’est éteinte après seulement quelques années au sein de la ligue. Des gens comme Tom Brady ou Peyton Manning sont tout simplement les meilleurs à cela – travailler en constante progression pour trouver un receveur démarqué. C’est un des atouts qui fait la différence entre un bon et un très bon quart-arrière. Le jeu de jambe est un autre atout qui peut différencier un grand quart-arrière des autres.

Chacune de ces dispositions peut être surmontée, toutefois, un quart-arrière de taille atypique aurait plus probablement le besoin de compenser par un autre moyen, tel que la force de bras, le jeu de jambe, la précision, etc.
