Kyle Newhall-Caballero: dalla NFL a Praga e ritorno

Vi si può trovare tutto quello che serve oppure si può andare fino a Boston, che dista solo un’ora di viaggio, o a New York City, che invece è a tre ore.
Alla Brown, Newhall-Caballero continuò a eccellere. Diventato titolare al terzo anno, nel 2009 guidò i Bears a un campionato da 6 vittorie e 4 sconfitte, chiudendo al terzo posto nella conference. Completò 259 lanci su 413, per 2.709 yard e 18 touchdown, venendo eletto nella selezione All-Ivy League e ricevendo diversi premi, tra i quali l’Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week, il Boston Gridiron Club Golden Helmet Award, e venendo selezionato nell’All-Star di College Sporting News. La stagione successiva, dopo aver subito una frattura alla mano, Newhall-Caballero ricevette una medical redshirt, saltando la stagione 2010 ma ottenendo la possibilità di giocare ancora nel 2011, anno in cui i Bears chiusero con 7 vittorie e 3 sconfitte, secondi ex-aequo nella Ivy League. Dopo aver chiuso la carriera alla Brown, Newhall-Caballero ritornò a Gilbert per prepararsi al draft NFL. “Mi dissero che potevo essere selezionato negli ultimi giri o essere un free agent appetibile, quindi nella peggiore delle ipotesi avrei firmato un contratto subito dopo il draft, in base alle mie prestazioni al pro day”.
Il pro day andò bene, facendo segnare 4.51 secondi sulle 40 yard e 93 cm di elevazione. “Poco dopo feci un colloquio coi Cleveland Browns, ma scelsero Brandon Weeden al primo giro e decisero di non prendere altri quarterback al draft”.
“Dopo il draft, restai in attesa di una telefonata, che non arrivò mai. Altri giocatori venivano chiamati per partecipare agli OTA (Organized Team Activities), perciò tornai ad allenarmi da solo. Dopo circa una settimana e mezzo, il mio agente mi chiamò per dirmi che i Raiders erano interessati e che volevano che andassi a Oakland per un provino. Ero veramente gasato. Non volevo raccontare in giro di essermi allenato per 5 mesi per poi restare con un pugno di mosche”.
“Alla fine ricevetti la chiamata: era ora di guadagnarsi un posto nella NFL”.
25 persone, tra allenatori e dirigenti, si presentarono al suo provino. “Fu snervante, ma allo stesso tempo piacevole. Era arrivato il momento di mettermi in mostra. Mi dissi: ‘se voglio farcela nella NFL devo fare bene adesso’”.
E così fece: i Raiders gli fecero firmare subito un contratto e gli fecero iniziare gli OTA.
“Era surreale. Ero euforico perché avevo investito tanto tempo per diventare un buon giocatore di football. Ce l’avevo fatta. Ero gasatissimo per aver firmato un contratto NFL e non vedevo l’ora di indossare un casco degli Oakland Raiders. In quei momenti ti commuovi anche, perché ci sono tante persone che tifano per te e vuoi renderle orgogliose, e alla fine ci riesci, diventi un giocatore NFL. Era veramente eccitante. È stata una delle sensazioni più belle che abbia mai provato in vita mia”.
Newhall-Caballero passò l’estate con gli Oakland Raiders a prepararsi per il campionato 2012. “Il mio primo ‘giorno di lavoro’ coi Raiders, ero in sala riunioni con due ex vincitori dell’Heisman Trophy come Carson Palmer e Matt Leinart, oltre che con Terrelle Pryor”.
“Quel tipo di intensità è comune nella NFL, dove le riunioni e gli allenamenti contano tantissimo, ma non l’ho mai trovata da nessun’altra parte”, fa notare Newhall-Caballero. “Il mio obiettivo era diventare il terzo quarterback, quindi ogni giorno era importantissimo per me. Quando sei il terzo o il quarto quarterback, la cosa difficile è riuscire a provare gli schemi durante gli allenamenti, perché sono il primo e il secondo a provare di più, e agli altri restano solo le briciole. Passavo la maggior parte del tempo con lo scout team e ad aspettare che mi chiamassero per provare qualche schema”.
Le squadre NFL solitamente tengono a roster tre quarterback, quindi la competizione era intensa. Sfortunatamente, Newhall-Caballero riuscì a giocare solo nella terza partita di preseason contro i Detroit Lions. “Diedi la palla al running back tre volte e mi inginocchiai altre tre a fine partita. Quindi a statistica ho corso per -5 yard”.
Newhall-Caballero venne tagliato prima dell’ultima partita di preseason. “Speravo che mi dessero un’altra possibilità”, ricorda, “ero anche un po’ imbarazzato – avevo viaggiato tre metri sopra il cielo nei mesi precedenti, con tante persone che mi scrivevano per congratularsi. Mi fece male, non mi diedero neanche la possibilità di sbagliare”.
“Ma posso dire che a un certo punto sono stato uno dei 100 QB della NFL. Ho giocato alcune azioni in NFL e ho potuto imparare da ottimi allenatori e farmi dei buoni amici”.
Dopo essere stato tagliato dai Raiders, Newhall-Caballero tornò in Arizona, continuando ad allenarsi e a tenersi in forma, aspettando un’altra opportunità. Iniziò a lavorare con Axon Sports, una startup che lavorava in ambiente sportivo. Gli piaceva, ma gli mancava il football.
Newhall-Caballero decise quindi di aprire un profilo su Europlayers, e diverse squadre iniziarono a contattarlo. “Fu in quel momento che i Prague Black Panthers mi chiamarono”, racconta, “e Praga era molto allettante come città”.
Firmò un contratto con i Prague Black Panthers, che nel 2010 si erano iscritti alla Austrian Football League (AFL), una delle migliori leghe europee, dopo aver dominato il campionato della Repubblica Ceca per anni.
I Panthers venivano da una stagione da 2 vittorie e 8 sconfitte nella ultra-competitiva AFL, e stavano cercando un quarterback che li portasse in alto.
Dopo essersi preparato lanciando palloni a Odell Beckham Jr., ricevitore dei New York Giants, Newhall-Caballero partì per Praga a inizio 2014.
Daniel Leško, Offensive Coordinator e General Manager dei Black Panthers, fu subito colpito da Newhall-Caballero. “Mi stupì subito al primo allenamento”, precisa Leško. “I suoi lanci erano incredibilmente precisi. Le sue capacità da allenatore ci aiutarono a sviluppare gli schemi e a far migliorare i nostri ricevitori. Per di più, aveva familiarità con l’Air Raid, il sistema d’attacco che utilizzavamo. Fu efficace fin dalla prima partita”.
Newhall-Caballero fece subito sentire la sua presenza, portando i Black Panthers al quarto posto e ai playoff, dopo una stagione da 3 vittorie e 5 sconfitte. In quella stagione sconfissero i finalisti dell’Austrian Bowl e persero contro i futuri campioni di solo 3 punti. Fu un enorme miglioramento rispetto al campionato precedente, in quanto riuscirono a giocarsi tutte le partite. Ai playoff affrontarono i Vienna Vikings, una delle migliori squadre europee degli ultimi vent’anni e futuri campioni, perdendo 41-27 in trasferta. Ciononostante, i Black Panthers erano diventati una squadra con cui bisognava fare i conti.
“Pensai che avessimo fatto un buon lavoro”, ricorda Newhall-Caballero. “Ce l’eravamo giocata quasi con tutti, perdendo un paio di partite di un touchdown o meno e sconfiggendo squadre che non avevamo mai battuto, per esempio due volte i Graz Giants e una volta gli Swarco Raiders, che vinsero il campionato nel 2015”.
Nel 2014, Newhall-Caballero concluse la stagione con 3.162 yard su lancio e 31 touchdown in solo nove partite, e venne premiato come MVP dell’Austrian Football League.
“Avevamo il miglior attacco per punti segnati, grazie soprattutto a Kyle”, aggiunge Leško, offensive coordinator di Praga. “Alla fine della stagione aveva lanciato il doppio delle yard rispetto al secondo quarterback in classifica”.
Dopo il campionato 2014, Newhall-Caballero ritornò in Arizona, con l’obiettivo di iniziare una carriera nel settore sportivo. Ma non ne aveva avuto abbastanza, e neanche Praga.
“Mi trovavo bene coi ragazzi”, afferma. “Mi piaceva la città. Sapevo cosa aspettarmi. Gli allenatori mi diedero ampio spazio di manovra e potei dire la mia riguardo agli schemi. Sapevo che se fossimo minimamente migliorati, avremmo avuto la possibilità di vincere il campionato”.
Nel 2015, Newhall-Caballero tornò quindi a Praga per cercare di portare a casa il titolo. La squadra chiuse il campionato al terzo posto, con 4 vittorie e 4 sconfitte, un ulteriore miglioramento rispetto alla stagione precedente. Sconfissero i Danube Dragons e i Graz Giants due volte, e persero di un punto contro i Vienna Vikings e di sei contro gli Swarco Raiders. Con la testa di serie numero 3 ai playoff, i Black Panthers andarono in trasferta a Innsbruck per affrontare i Raiders in semifinale, perdendo di poco, 48-46. I Raiders poi sconfissero i Vikings 38-0 in finale. Newhall-Caballero chiuse la stagione con 3.241 yard e 32 touchdown in 9 partite, migliorando le sue statistiche e guadagnandosi il secondo titolo consecutivo di MVP. Il campionato era finito, ma Newhall-Caballero e i Black Panthers avevano detto la loro nella AFL.
Dopo l’ultimo campionato, Newhall-Caballero iniziò un tirocinio estivo nel reparto scouting degli Oakland Raiders, al termine del quale ottenne un contratto nel reparto gestione giocatori. È tornato in NFL, nel posto che gli spetta, e il suo futuro è roseo.
Comunque, giocare per i Prague Black Panthers è stata un’esperienza fantastica per Newhall-Caballero, dandogli l’opportunità di finire la carriera in bellezza. Giocare in una delle capitali europee e ai massimi livelli del football europeo è stata un’opportunità unica. “La cosa che porterò sempre con me è l’amore per il football che si respira là. Era come tornare al liceo, non posso descrivere quanto lo sport fosse puro: i ragazzi lo fanno solo per passione. Quell’amore era quanto di più puro avessi visto in tutte le squadre in cui avevo giocato. Nella NFL, ogni giorno è decisivo. In Europa i giocatori non vivono quel tipo di stress, giocano perché gli piace farlo”.
“L’esperienza nella sua interezza è stata più bella della somma delle parti. Hai l’opportunità di vivere e viaggiare in Europa e giocare a uno sport che ami condividendo il tuo talento e la tua esperienza con la squadra. Poi ci aggiungi i compagni di squadra e i membri dello staff che ti circondano, che portano un senso di cameratismo e fratellanza che difficilmente ritrovi nella vita di tutti i giorni. Sono riuscito a fare cose in Europa che la maggior parte delle persone possono solo sognare, e solo grazie alla passione che condividiamo per il football”.
E pensare che tutto è iniziato in una fattoria.
