Warum ist American Football keine olympische Sportart?

Die Sportart American Football gibt es etwa seit dem Jahre 1869, ein wenig über vier Jahre nach Ende des Amerikanischen Bürgerkrieges. Um dies in Relation zu setzen: Das Telefon wurde von Alexander Graham Bell erst 1876 erfunden, ganze sieben Jahre später. Das macht American Football wirklich sehr alt.
Für eine Sportart die in über achtzig Ländern gespielt wird, der mit Abstand beliebteste Sport in den Vereinigten Staaten ist und den es länger gibt als das Telefon erscheint es seltsam dass American Football mittlerweile noch nicht olympisch ist. Doch genau dies ist momentan der Fall, nachdem die Sportart auch von den Olympischen Spielen in Tokio 2020 ausgeschlossen wurde.
Diese Entscheidung ist sehr kurzsichtig gewählt, da die Einführung von American Football ins olympische Programm den Sport nicht nur auf die internationale Bühne bringen und ihm eine Wachstumschance geben kann, sondern darüber hinaus auch den Sommerspielen eine große Menge an Zuschauern beschert die Olympia ansonsten nicht anschauen würden. Schätzungen variieren, jedoch verfolgten weit über 120 Millionen Menschen den Super Bowl XLIX zwischen den New England Patriots und den Seattle Seahawks – ein nicht zu vernachlässigendes Publikum. Das Internationale Olympische Komitee (IOC) verpasst somit eine unglaubliche Chance ihren Marktanteil sowie ihre Berichterstattung zu erhöhen. Es ist wohl klar dass American Football mehr Zuschauer hätte als Synchronschwimmen oder Bogenschießen – zufälligerweise zwei Sportarten die bei den Spielen 2020 vertreten sind.
Als wieso genau ist American Football nicht olympisch?
Olympische Sportarten wie Eishockey oder Basketball wurden in den Jahren 1876 beziehungsweise 1891 erfunden, also können wir daraus schließen dass das Alter einer Sportart für diese Entscheidung nicht relevant ist.
Sportarten wie Rugby oder Boxen – im Allgemeinen als brutaler angesehen wie American Football – werden beide bei den nächsten zwei Olympischen Spielen ausgetragen, also ist der gesundheitliche Schutz von Athleten augenscheinlich auch kein Grund zur Sorge.
Vielleicht stellt die sportspezifische Nomenklatur eine Beschränkung dar – immerhin heißt der Sport American Football. Das Anhängen einer Kultur an den Namen einer Sportart hat verständlicherweise die vorgefasste positive und negative Stereotypisierung der Fans als Folge, dies könnte jedoch einfach umgangen werden indem man die Sportart nicht als American Football bezeichnet, sondern ihr einen Name wie Gridiron gibt, eine Praxis die in angelsächsischen Ländern wie Großbritannien oder Australien bereits üblich ist.
Der Gastgeber der nächsten Sommerspiele, Japan, ist gewöhnlich unter den besten vier bei internationalen Turnieren, somit spielt der Austragungsort ebenfalls keine Rolle.
Eventuell sieht das IOC die unverhältnismäßige Dominanz der USA sowie Ländern wie Kanada, Mexiko oder Japan als Problem? Das gleiche Argument könnte dann aber auch bei Baseball, Basketball oder Softball gebracht werden, alle drei Sportarten die zu den Spielen 2020 zugelassen sind.
Was also ist der Grund des Ausschlusses von American Football von den Olympischen Spielen? Es gibt wirklich nur einen einzigen Grund der Sinn ergibt, und dieser ist schwer zu akzeptieren da wir selber daran Schuld sind:
Der einzige Grund warum unsere großartige Sportart bei der nächsten Olympiade nicht vertreten ist kommt daher dass es der International Federation of American Football (IFAF) an Weitsicht und Führung fehlt.
Die IFAF, das Football-Pendant zur FIFA, ist beileibe nicht mit dem Fußballverband zu vergleichen. Die überwiegende Mehrheit an American Football-Spielern, Coaches und Fans weltweit hat nicht den Hauch einer Ahnung welche Person im Moment die IFAF leitet oder welche Ziele der Verband verfolgt. Dieser ist größtenteils geführt von Amateuren und Ehrenamtlichen und wird von einem Präsidenten ohne Vollzeitjob geleitet. Die IFAF hat weit weniger Einfluss und Macht als die National Football League, welche noch nicht einmal dem Verband ihre volle Befürwortung zugesagt hat. Die NFL bietet der IFAF fast keine Unterstützung bei deren größtem Turnier, der IFAF Weltmeisterschaft – und dies aus einem guten Grund. Die IFAF hat bisher keine Anzeichen gemacht zu zeigen wer die Zügel in der Hand hat und in welche Richtung der Verband in Zukunft gehen wird.
Als Beispiel kann hier die Weltmeisterschaft 2015 genannt werden. Im Dezember des Vorjahres gab das örtliche Organisationskomitee in Stockholm bekannt, dass die gesammelten finanziellen Mittel für die Veranstaltung unter mysteriösen Umständen verschwunden seien, im Zuge dieser Aufdeckung eine Mantelgesellschaft enthüllt wurde und dass der Präsident der IFAF und des schwedischen Verbandes (SAFF) aus gesundheitlichen Gründen eine verlängerte Auszeit nehmen werde. Das Turnier wurde daraufhin im letzten Moment nach Canton, Ohio verschoben und die Anzahl der teilnehmenden Mannschaften verringerte sich von zwölf auf sieben, doch die Dinge wendeten sich von da an keinesfalls zum Besseren. Die IFAF gab im April 2015 den Rücktritt ihres Präsidenten bekannt, wohin dieser darauf im Gegenzug die Kontrolle der Verbandswebsite übernahm, die Bekanntmachung löschte und behauptete Opfer eines Putschversuches geworden zu sein. Dies geschah zufälligerweise genau zu dem Zeit in der American Football als olympische Sportart nominiert worden war. Es ist unklar wer letztendlich diese formelle Bewerbung gegenüber dem IOC repräsentiert hat, jedoch ist es offensichtlich dass diese Situation im Zuge der Entscheidung sehr unbeständig war.
Zugegebenermaßen gibt es viele Komiteemitglieder der IFAF die einen positiven Beitrag zur Entwicklung des Sportes beigetragen und dafür für ihre Bemühungen Lob verdient haben, jedoch ist dies bei Weitem nicht genug. Die Führung ist bis jetzt noch zu wässrig, widersprüchlich und turbulent um jemals wirklich von Organisationen wie der NFL oder dem IOC ernst genommen zu werden. Die IFAF hat bis jetzt noch keinen erkennbaren Plan entwickelt und konnte nicht zeigen, dass sie die übereinstimmende Unterstützung ihrer Mitgliedsstaaten erhalten kann.
Dies ist auch der Grund warum The Growth of a Game überhaupt erst entstanden ist – um die Lücke in der Entwicklung zu füllen die von durch IFAF und unseren faktischen Anführern entstanden ist. Allein in Europa spielen in vierzig verschiedenen Ländern in über 1.600 Erwachsenen-Mannschaften American Football, und die Sportart wird, mit oder ohne der Führung der IFAF, weiterhin wachsen und gedeihen.
Mit dem Chaos innerhalb der IFAF und den Korruptionsfällen der FIFA kommt die folgende Frage auf: Erhalten wir eine faire Repräsentation für unsere Leistungen?
Sofern sich die IFAF nicht irgendwie zusammenreißen kann oder eine Alternative an derer Statt aufkommt wird eine Aufnahme der Sportart in die Olympischen Spiele eine ferne Zukunftsvision sein.
Dennoch, die überwältigende Reaktion auf The Growth of a Game hat es einfacher gemacht optimistisch über die Zukunft des American Footballs zu sein. Dieser Sport ist an der Schwelle großartig zu sein und benötigt nur noch diesen einen letzten Schub um in den meisten europäischen Ländern in den Mainstream zu gelangen. Wir werden das schaffen, und mit unseren anhaltenden Bemühungen werden wir schließlich den Tag erleben an dem American Football die Anerkennung erhält die er verdient.
